2001-05-01 QUEENSBURY RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES OF MEETING MAY 1, 2001 Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission of the Town of Queensbury held Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the Queensbury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New York. Chairman Simmonds called the meeting to order at 7:30 a.m. Present: Commissioners Auer, Carusone, Hersh, LaBombard, Maine and Simmonds Also Present: Asst. Director Lovering, Aquatics Supervisor Herald and Director Hansen Absent: None APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Hersh, seconded by Commissioner Maine moved to approve the minutes of the April 3, 2001 meeting. There were no corrections and the motion was unanimously approved by voice vote. COMMUNICATIONS AND REMARKS FROM VISITORS The items of correspondence included in the monthly packet were reviewed and there was discussion on Jaime Coffin (Green Mountain College intern) and the newly completed safety manual. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Faith Bible Church ProDertv Acauisition The director gave a status report on the Faith Bible Church (FBC) acquisition and reported on Dan Luciano's recent presentation to the Town Board. The board resolution ratifying the FBC management agreement will be adopted by resolution at the next board meeting. The management plan is also being developed by Jim Miller with assistance from the director and should be completed shortly. Thereafter, the area will become a town park facility in 2 to 3 years. Recreation Commission Vacancy Personnel Committee Chairman John Carusone reported that the committee had interviewed four people and were asked by the Town Board to recommend two. Doug Irish, Bill Parks, Art Gottlieb and John Dwyer were the candidates who applied for the vacancy. Doug Irish and Bill Parks will be recommended and when a board decision is made, a letter of appreciation will be sent to the others. Freedom Park Chairman Simmonds gave the director the plaque that was presented to the Department at the opening of Freedom Park and reported that the grand opening /dedication event went extremely well. NEW BUSINESS New DeDartment Laborer Position The director reported on the status of the new laborer position being advertised by the department. Over 65 applications were received for the position that will include some seasonal shift work to help the department reduce overtime. Nineteen applicants were interviewed and the final four will be re- interviewed by staff and the personnel committee before a final decision is made. MONTHLY DEPARTMENT REPORTS The director presented a short verbal monthly report highlighting winter programs and some of the plans for the upcoming summer season. Summer staff hiring has begun and the vehicles/equipment authorized in the 2001 budget are on order. The director outlined the softball league situation and there was discussion on how field usage by the public is monitored. It was suggested that all fields be posted "first come, first served" and this will be implemented as soon as possible. There being no further business, the commission meeting was adjourned at 8:15 a.m. The next meeting will be held on June 5, 2001 at 7:30 a.m. for a site visit to the Hiland Park area off Meadowbrook Road in Queensbury. ~?!~ '5 arron Simmonds, Chairman Minutes prepared by Harry R.
