QUEENSBURY RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF MEETING
APRIL 29, 1985
Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission of
the Town of Queensbury, held Monday, April 29, 1985 at the Queensbury
Town Office Building, Queensbury, New York. Chairperson Little called
the meeting to order at 7:38 P.M.
PRESENT:
Commissioners B1y, LaBombard, Lemery, Little, Councilman
Monahan and Morrell and Director Hansen
ABSENT:
Commissioners Granger (ex.), Martin (ex.), Teti (ex.)
VISITORS:
None
Due to the lack of a quorum, approval of the minutes of March 25th,
1985 meeting were postponed until the next meeting.
CORRESPONDENCE
The commission discussed the letter from the Supervisor regarding
the pool project grant denial from H. C. R. S. Though the Department
will not receive federal funding for the total project, a smaller grant
($5,500.), through Warren County, was approved for park equipment at
the site.
GURNEY LANE POOL UPDATE
The Commission requested an update on the status of the pool
project and Mrs. Monahan relayed that the Board had taken no action
to date.
1984 SUMMER PROGRAM REPORT
The Commission discussed the 1984 summer program report and the
Director's analysis which was included in the monthly packet.
The Commission was concerned over the figure shown for attendance
in that they wanted to know hbw many different children attended, as
opposed to total attendance.
The Commission also suggested that this type of report be present-
ed in the fall, right after the season, when the program is fresh in
everyones mind. Recommendations can be made and there is sufficient
time to think about and act on recommendations over the next six months.
Then in the spring, the report can again be discussed.
The Commission reviewed the Director's analysis/recommendations
for 1985 and agreed with the staff changes. It was suggested that the
ball program title be changed to Sports Leader.
Regarding the Specialist Program, the Commission felt that there
should be a reduced program (one or two weeks per) and that specialists
should be older individuals, preferably adults. The Director explained
that he would try to seek out and set up this type of program, however,
based on his experience, he felt enticing this type of individual was
not realistic. The Commission felt it should not be difficult to find
individuals qualified in pottery, calligraphy, bike repair, etc. to
present programs on a one time basis. The Director will attempt to
find and use these types of individuals for this years program.
The Commission suggested the Department try one or two clinics
instead of the specialist program offered last year.
Overall, the Commission felt the playground program should be
more structured with less free time.
The Commission made other suggestions concerning additional field
trips and special events and all of these will be implemented this
summer.
SCHOOL POOL USAGE
The Director relayed that it did not look promising for the use
of the school pool this summer. Based on the condition of the pool,
and the school district's tentative plans, the pool is scheduled to
be completely repaired this summer. If this is the case, the Depart-
ment will again, as in the past, conduct all swimming programs (lessons
and open swim) at Gurney Lane.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
The Director presented a verbal report, updating the Commission
on the Department's new riding lawn mower, senior citizen activities
and the adult softball leagues.
The Commission discussed the Glen Lake canoe access area and
commented that there were posts missing and that vehicles were still
being parked illegally.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at
9:15 P.M. The next meeting will be held on Monday, May 20th, 1985
at 7:30 P.M.
