MINUTES OF MEETING
MARCH 25, 1985
Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission of
the Town of Queensbury, held Monday, March 25, 1985 at the Queens-
bury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New Yor~. Chairperson Little
called the meeting to order at 7:31 p.m.

Teti, Councilman Monahan and Morrell and Director Hansen

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Teti moved to approve the minutes of the January
28, 1985 meeting. Commissioner Martin seconded the motion, which was
unanimously approved.
CORRESPONDENCE
The Commission reviewed the letter from Torn Flaherty regarding
installation of the water service at the West End Park. The Com-
mission suggested that the Director stay in contact with the Water
Department in order to monitor the operation and insure its complet-
ion before next year.
The correspondence from Pat Joyce, LARAC Executive Director,
. regarding the January 25th performance for children at the Queens-
bury Elementary School, which the Department co-sponsored, was also
reviewed and discussed briefly.
POSSIBLE SUMMER PROGRAMS
The Director reviewed the informational handout which detailed
a number of new or improved programs being proposed for the coming
summer season.
The idea of summer playground activities at the Glen Lake As-
sociation area, on Glen Lake Road, was discussed and it was explained
that this area might be utilized in addition to, or in place of, the
Bay Ridge playground site.

The consensus of those in attendance was that the Bay Ridge play-
ground area, even though lightly attended, served a definite ne~d and
should be continued. Rather than eliminate the Bay Ridge playground
altogether, it was suggested that the staff at the site could be re-
duced further in 1985 (from three to two leaders) and the program con-
tinued. The Glen Lake area, on the other hand, offers an ideal location
with playground 'equipment and a ball field/soccer area, and therefore,
a two-man staffed playground could be tried this year.
The Director will schedule a meeting with the Association Board
of Directors to explain the Department's program and will report back
at a later date.
A second program suggestion regarding a mini three-session sai1-
boating course for children and adults beginning in June was also
explained. After much discussion the Commission agreed that the
program had merit and should be advertised and offered this summer.
Another possible summer program discussed was a chi1drens'
conditioning program on the Queensbury School grounds, supervised
by Duke Benz. The Department offers very little for teens, 14 years
of age and older, and Duke proposes to organize and instruct a 1-hour
five day a week, five week conditioning program. As with the så±l-
boating course, there is a fee to participate, which will cover the
cost of equipment and instruction. The Commission questioned the
cost involved, the instructor's salary, and who could participate.
Overall, the Commission was in favor of the program but suggested the
price be $1.50 per day or $5.00 per week and that there be no obliga-
tion by participants to attend every day.
Finally, the Director updated the Commission on the student per-
formance, by the Lake George Opera Festival, which the Department will
take part in this summer. The show, "The Daughter of the Regiment"
will be presented on Thursday, August 15th at 1:00 p.m. and the Depart-
ment is committed to purchasing a quantity of $2.00 tickets. How the
tickets will be distributed has yet to be decided.
Councilwoman Monahan suggested that the Department investigate
additional adult programs, including trips and special events. The
Director will look into these types of activities and attempt to
program something this summer.
GURNEY LANE POOL PROJECT
The Councilman and the Commission discussed the recent joint
meeting regarding the Gurney Lane Pool project. Both the Town Board
and the Commission are still ~ery much in favor of the project and
it looks as though re-bidding the project will be attempted sometime
in the summer after a pre-bid meeting with as many contractors as
possible.

The status of Round Pond was also briefly discussed and the
Commission was advised by the Councilmen that negotiations between
the owner and the Town were still ongoing.
Those in attendance discussed the present situation regarding
neighborhood parks, especially in the new areas which are being
developed in Queensbury. It was explained that the new Town building
and zoning codes did not seem to make adequate allowance for rec-
reation areas in these new neighborhoods. At one time, it was expected
that these regulations would require contractors/land developers to
set aside a portion of the total area being developed or an amount of
funds equal to one parcel, for the Town to use in the development of
neighborhood recreation areas. Based on further discussion, it would
seem that this type of regulation was not being implemented at the
present time.
It was suggested that Dick Roberts, of the Planning Board, be
invited to the next Commission meeting to discuss ànd explain the new
codes and their application and interpretation in this situation.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
The Director's report, and attached monthly budget update, was
reviewed and briefly discussed.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at
8:53 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 22, 1985
at 7:30 p.m.
