MINUTES OF MEETING
AUGUST 23, 1982
Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission
of the Town of Queensbury, held Monday, August 23, 1982 at the
Queensbury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New York. Chairman
Yasko called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m.

ABSENT:
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Due to the lack of a quorum, the minutes of the July 26, 1982
meeting were not presented for approval.
COMMUNICATIONS/CORRESPONDENCE
None.
HOVEY POND PROJECT UPDATE
The Director updated the Commission regarding the Hovey Pond
project. The Warren County Soil and Water Conservation Service
has completed and submitted their preliminary report concerning
the Pond and the problems which presently exist. Hovey Pond is
seriously overgrown with weeds and silt from Halfway Brook has
reduced the water level of the Pond in some places to less than
12 inches. The preliminary report pointed this out and suggested
possible alternative planning cosiderations to alleviate the prob-
lems. A steering committee of To\qn personnel and local residents
has been formed to study the report and discuss the considerations..
Additional information regarding water quality and analysis of
the present fish population were requested by the Service and
will be undertaken by Town personnel.

The two-story house which was also gifted to the Town by
Finch Pruyn was also discussed. Work on the building is also
proceeding and will continue this fall. Recreation Department
personnel have done most of the outside cleanup work and bids
for the interior renovation and the roof repair will be let
shortly. The Queensbury Senior Citizen Club has re-affirmed
their desire to use the building as an arts and crafts/small
meeting room facility, and based on this, the Town is proceed-
ing accordingly.
1983 RECREATION DEPARTrffiNT BUDGET DISCUSSION
The Director advised the Commission regarding the 1983
Recreation Department budget. The tentative budget is due to
the Supervisor in September and therefore, the Director request-
ed a special Commission meeting to review the budget. Commis-
sioners Teti and Yasko volunteered and the Director was instructed
to inform Commissioners Bly and Granger of the special meeting
which has been scheduled for September 20th. The Director will
send out reminder notices and copies of the tentative budget prior
to the meeting.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
The Director's report was verbally presented and there was
some discussion regarding summer programs. Most programs ended
as of August 20th, and overall, the Director was pleased with
the total summer program. Attendance at Gurney Lane is way up
compared with previous years, due primarily to residents not
being able to use the school pool.
The five neighborhood playground softball and arts and
crafts programs were also well attended and registration for
the golf and tennis lesson programs increased again this year.
The use of Gurney Lane, for the swim lesson program worked
out extremely well and will be programmed for next year.' The
Department anticipates being able to use the indoor pool next
year for the majority of swimming lessons, however, many tiny
tot, beginner and advanced beginner childrens lessons will be
offered at Gurney Lane. The facility is ideal for this type
of lesson and if the weather will cooperate, the result will
be a benefit to the community in terms of an expanded swim les-
son program.
The monthly budget update was reviewed and there were no
questions.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned
at 8:34 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Monday, September
27, 1982.
