QUEENSBURY RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF MEETING
MARCH 23, 1981
Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission
of the Town of Queensbury, held Monday, March 23, 1981, at the
Queensbury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New York. Chairman
Lyon called the meeting to order at 7:30 P.M.
PRESENT:
Commissioners Bly, Champagne, Lavigne, Lyon,., Roop,
Yasko and Director Hansen.
ABSENT:
Commissioner Howe
VISITORS:
Lee Tugas (Post Star)
EXECUTIVE SESSION:
Prior to the start of the actual meeting, Director Hansen
was asked to leave the room and the Recreation Commission met in
Executive Session to discuss personnel matters.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Returning to open session and fOllowing review, Commissioner
Roop moved to approve the minutes of the February 11, 1981 meeting.
Commissioner Lavigne seconded the motion, which was unanimously
approved.
COMMUNICATIONS/CORRESPONDENCE:
The Director explained the 1980 Warren County Youth Bureau
bussing grant recap sheet and advised the 'Commission that the
Department would receive a similar amount for youth bussing in 1981.
The two program event flyers (swim meet and senior citizen trip)
enclosed in the monthly packet were also explained.
The Director relayed a note of thanks from the American Red Cross
Organization in regards to the SWim-a-thon which was held in February
at the Queensbury School pool in conjunction with the Department's
Open Swim program.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
The Commission discussed the rough draft copy of the summary
of the second section of the department's master plan. Overall
the Commission felt the summary adequately outlined the second
section and agreed with the Director that a similar summary for the
first section should be written. The Director will now begin to
write the final section of the master plan which should include
recommendations, a timetable and a financial analysis.

NEW BUSINESS:
The Director reviewed the Recreation Department's revenue
recap sheet which detailed the total amount of revenues which have
been received by the Department since 1976.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
The Director's Report was reviewed and the Commission had
concerns regarding the ice skating program. Commissioner Lyon
suggested that for next year more permanent hockey nets be built
and that a permanent sign indicating the free skating and the hockey
areas also be implaced so as to inform those who wish to participate.
The situation concerning the Recreation Department's vehicle
was discussed and it was recommended, as a last resort, that money
be expended from the Department's budget to repair the present
vehicle.
The Director relayed a message from Dr. Irion, Queensbury
School Superintendent concerning the use of outdoor facilities in
the future. The school is considering closing some of the present
open areas, for as long as a year, so that the grassy areas will
have a chance for self rejuvenation. At the present time, because
of extensive use, on ~ twelve ~on'th basis,' by the school~ the
Recrea~ion Department and the public, many of these areas are in
bad'shape (dirt instead of grass). Closing off some of these areas
may directly or indirectly effect the Recreation Department's
future program plans and therefore, Dr. Irion suggested that the
meeting be held, with school and Town officials to consider
alternatives. The school has suggested the possibility of creating
new open areas to the north of the present school complex and
would like to discuss this with Town representatives. Chairman
Lyon agreed to represent the Recreation Commission and the Director
will contact the Supervisor to arrange an initial meeting.
The Director advised the Commission that a representative from
Duke concrete will be contacted shortly regarding the application
of a non-slip surface for the problem areas at the Gurney Lane
Recreation pool. This process will hopefully correct the slippery
situation which has plagued the pool in the past.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at
8:22 P.M. The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 27, 1981.
