QUEENS BURY RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF MEETING
NOVEMBER 24, 1980
Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission of
the Town of Queensbury, held Monday, ,November 24, 1980, at the
Queensbury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New York. Chairman Lyon
called the meeting to order at 7:36 P.M.
PRESENT: Commissioners Bly, Champagne, Howe, Lyon, Vasko and Director
Hansen.
ABSENT: Commissioners Lavigne and Roop
VISITORS: Lee Tugas (Post Star)
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Following review, Commissioner Bly moved to approve the minutes
of the October 27, 1980 meeting. Commissioner Vasko seconded the
motion, which was unanimously approved.
COMMUNICATIONS/CORRESPONDENCE:
The Director relayed a verbal request by Mr. Dick Young on behalf
of the Warren/Washington County Red Cross organization, to use the
Queensbury School pool on either January 31st or February 1st for their
annual Swim-a-thon.· It was pointed out that the Department's Open SWim
program would be in operation at the pool on both dates however, arrange-
ments could be made to shorten one day's program to accommodate the
Swim-a-thon if so desired.
The Commission felt that such an event was in the best interest of
the community and instructed the Director to coordinate with the Red
Cross to work out the specific details. In addition, the Director was
instructed to check with Mr. Tom Vole concerning why the Red Cross was
not using the Hudson Falls pool, as in the past.
COMMUNITY LEAGUE REQUEST:
The Director updated the Commission concerning the Queensbury
Community League's request for assistance. It was pointed out that the
Town could in fact enter into an agreement to make improvements to the
baseball field, with the School District and not the Community League
but that usage by the Town would have to be a condition. Mr. Levy, as
requested also provided further information concerning the $9,000.00
electrical cost and explained the trenching for the electrical service
would cost about $1,300.00

The Commission voted to table further discussion and requested
that the Director contact Mr. Levy and invi~e him to speak to the
Commission at the next meeting.
SPORTS ACCIDENT POLICY:
The Commission was updated concerning the Sports Accident Policy
which is being investigated by the Cool Insurance Agency. Peg Fish
has the information concerning all the Department's programs and should
have a specific quote by December.
SPORTS LIGHTING INFORMATION:
The Director relayed information regarding softball and tennis
lighting which is under investigation. Niagara Mohawk provided an
estimate of approximately $7,200.00 per year as the total rental cost
of an adequate softball lighting system at the Queensbury School Field.
This type of system was usually installed with overhead wiring and
present State electrical codes required lighting at a school complex
to be underground. Therefore, based on the high rental cost and the
problem with wiring Niagara Mohawk has recommended that the Town purchase
rather than rent a lighting system.
The Director also explained Russell Brown's updated sports lighting
estimate which was broken down into three areas: softball lighting,
tennis lighting and an installation cost. The Commission voted to table
any further discussion of sports lighting until after the Department's
Master Plan has been completed and Department priorities identified.
WINTER PROGRAM REPO~:
The Commission reviewed the 1979-80 Recreation Department Winter
Progrem Report and the Director explained the eleven (11) recommendations.
The Commission was Concerned over the cost ger individual for the Open
Swim Program and suggested that the Department be more cost conscious
in the future regarding this program. .
Commissioner Bly made the motion to accept the Winter Report and
accompanying recommendations and after a second by Commissioner
Champagne the motion was unanimously approved.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
The Commission reviewed the Director's Report and there were no
comments. The Department's Monthly Budget Update for October was omitted
because the Town books have not been closed.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at
9:33 P,M, The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 5, 1980.
