MINUTES OF MEETING
JULY 28,1980
Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission
of the Town of Queensbury, held Monday, July 28, 1980, at the
Queensbury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New York. Chairman
Lyon called the meeting to order at 7:31 P.M.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Following review, Commissioner Bly moved to approve the min-
utes of the June 23, 1980 meeting. Commissioner Howe seconded the
motion, which was unanimously approved.
COMMUNICATIONS:
The Director explained the ball game trip which is scheduled
for August 24, 1980 to Montreal. A maximum of eighty children and
adults under the supervision of eight chaperones will travel in two
school busses for the afternoon game with San Diego. Hopefully
this and the swim meet will become annual special events provided
by the Recreation Department.
DIRECTORS REPORT:
The Director requested comments from the Commissioners concern-
ing the summer programs. On the whole, very little negative criti-
cism has been received concerning recreation programs and both the
Director and the Commission were pleased with the progress to date,
Commissioner Roop brought up the subject of lighting for the
evening programs. A number of possible locations were discus.sed
and include the Queensbury School field complex. Lighting would
certainly increase programming for adult softball, tennis lessons,
and could also be used at the ice skating area. The cost of light-
ing was briefly discussed and it was estimated that one or two banks
of lights strategically located would provide illumination for soft-
ball games, tennis play, and the ice area. The Director was instru-
cted to check on lighting costs and possible locations and report
back at the next meeting.

The summer program recap was reviewed and highlighted by the
Director and there was some discussion concerning the playground
and swim lessons programs.
The Director ex~lained in detail his idea (previously mentioned
in the June Director s report) concerning program registration for
residents. Due to the popularity of swim lessons and some other
programs, it was suggested that in comming years in order to insure
that residents receive priority, that the Department allow residents
to register first. The Director will prepare a more detailed re-
port explaining the procedure later this fall.
The maintenance staff is again trying to remedy the problem of
the slipperiness of the Gurney Lane swimming pool asphalt surface.
The action of chlorinated water on a painted asphalt surface creates
a potentially dangerous situation in terms of accidents. The staff
attempted to affix strips of rubber matting to the pool apron, how-
ever, the recommended cement did not hold. Caution signs were also
painted on the pool apron but this is only a warning and does not
correct the problem. Commissioner B1y suggested that coarse pumice
be mixed with the paint prior to application. The Director will in-
vestigate this and other alternatives as this situation must be cor-
rected as soon as possible.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at
8:22 P.M. The next meeting will be held on Monday, August 25,1980.
