1979-06-25 QUEENSBURY RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES OF MEETING JUNE 25, 1979 Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission of the Town of Queensbury, held Monday, June 25, 1979, at the Queensbury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New York. Chairman Lyon called the meeting to order at 7:32 P. M. Present: Commissioners: Bly, Champagne, Lyon, Roop, Yasko, Director Hanson Absent: Commissioners: Howe (ex), Lavigne Visitors: B. Glendening APPROVAL OF MINUTES Following review, Commissioner Roop moved to approve the minutes of the May 21, 1979 meeting. Commissioner Bly seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. CORRESPONDENCE/COMMUNICATIONS The Director explained the correspondence received from the Warren/Hamilton County Community Action Agency requesting permission to use Gurney Lane this summer. The Commission expressed some concern with safety, in that, considering the general public and other outside groups, that the size of the crowd using the pool might be too large to provide adequate supervision. The Commission suggested that the Director attempt to permit only one group at one time to use the facility. The Director explained that this could be done and that he would contact the Community Action Agency and the Salvation Army. Mrs. Glendening then asked to speak to the Commission on behalf of a group of residents concerning the Supervisor's comments about the Recreation Department's baseball program. The Commission explained that the Supervisor was acting on his own, and was not speaking for the Recreation Commission. It was pointed out that a letter from the Commission to the Supervisor had been sent, in which, it was suggested that the Supervisor retract his statement because of incorrect information. The Director further explained that the Recreation Department would continue to offer programs open to all residents, and that this included varsity athletes. Mrs. Glendening also expressed concern with the neighborhood park concept which the Recreation Department has implemented this year. It was pointed out that this experimental program seemed to be working, as more children are participating when compared to previous years, (Queensbury School - 1 location). The Commission and the Director will evaluate the program at the end of the summer, and recommendations for the future will be made. -2- DIRECTOR'S REPORT The Director's Report was reviewed, and overall most summer programs are going well. The initial reponse by participants to the playground, softball and arts & crafts programs at all four locations was excellent, and will hopefully continue for the next eight weeks. Busing for the playground softball program will begin next week once teams and a schedule are determined. Based on the first day attendence figures, the Director and the Commission agreed that the satellite playground programs should be expanded to a five-day week program. The Director will implement this change provided attendence remains fairly high, and the cost to implement is within the Recreation Department budget. swim lessons and the method of registration were the final topics of discussion. It was the consensus that the telephone registration system should be reviewed, and an alternate less inconvenient method be found for future program registration. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:50 P. M. The next meeting will be held on Monday, July 23, 1979 at 7:30 P. M.
