Per your request, I determined whether the existing rafter configuration would adequately support the additional solar panel weight. I also calculated expected rooftop wind loads for this building at this location. I visited the project site on September 23,2017 and obtained the following information: a 1-sty main house roof and an attached garage roof are to receive additional solar panels. Solar arrays of the same style and weight are already installed on a portion of the roofs. The main house roof is framed with engineered trusses with 2x6 top chords spaced 24"on center. The trusses are overlain with plywood sheathing and corrugated metal roofing. The garage roof is framed with engineered trusses with 2x4 top chords spaced 24"on center. The garage trusses are also overlain with plywood sheathing and corrugated metal roofing. Roof details are described further on the enclosed calculation sheets. Accorditlg to information provided by Apex: The solar panels will be Trina 275W mounted to aluminum racking. The racking will be K2 Everest Xpress Rail 22 mounted to the roof using Everest's standing seam clips and 6x36 mm self-tapping screws. Clip and screw requirements are determined by the manufacturer using the site specific array layout and wind data provided in this report. A summary of my evaluation follows: First the existing roof dead loads(rafters,roofing,etc..)were determined. According to the solar panel manufacturer's information,each panel is approx 3.25' x 5.4' and weighs approx 41 lbs. The panels will be grouped into arrays positioned on the roofs in a southerly facing orientation. Since there will be several,relatively small point loads distributed over the surface of the roofs,this was treated as a distributed load. The dead load due to the solar panels was determined to be 2.8 psf, including the racking. The live loads(snow loads)were then determined using the procedures in ASCE 7-10. Since the panels will lie close to,and parallel with,the roofline,there isn't expected to be an increase in snow load as a result of the placement of the panels. The ground snow load for this area is 50 psf. The AF&PA span tables were used to verify span and deflection criteria,where relevant. The wind load was then calculated using the procedures in ASCE 7-10. There are several factors which effect wind load, and these are stated on the enclosed calculations. A 115-mph wind speed(3-sec gust) was used for the analysis. In conclusion: The existing truss top chords should be adequate to accept the additional solar panel load. The calculated rooftop wind load for this building in this location was determined to be 21.0 psf. When applied to the projected vertical and horizontal surfaces of the panels,the resulting shear force is 132 lbs and the uplift force is 344 lbs per panel. A copy of the calculations and assumptions is enclosed. All system components must be installed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. It is imperative that the contractor provide a watertight seal around any roof penetrations. Further,the panels must be installed in a manner which does not restrict the normal roof drainage patterns. While consideration was given to snow drifting, it is highly recommended that the owner not allow excessive snow or ice buildup on the roof,as with any roof.
