Also present Fred Alexy and Douglas Crockwellr- ~ Mr. Alexy submitted a map of development and the Board discussed the matter with him and also the Old Town- Road that ran along the shore of Lake George. The, Town Board was to act- as a committee of the whole and will view the situation in its entirety, - Douglas Crockwell was present and discussed with the Board the' traffic problem existing at East Sanford Street since the construction of- the ' ` new Fast and West Bypass. Douglas also pointed out the road was very narrow and suggested warning sj44a-. A discussion``was had respecting the, widening of the road and the matter was referred to the County Attorney. At this point in the meeting, Bernard Codner, Town Superintendent of Highways entered. County. . have, .therefore rescinded that portion of our order dated August 31, L#59, which establishes a 35 MPH speed limit on Route 9-L northerly from the City of Glens Fall§ , and have re-established the 35 MPH speed limit for an additional 300 feet. _ A copy of' the order is enclosed for the records of the town. MAEDER (signed) T.C. 7 (2-61) Director - -24-2 STATE TRAFFIC COMMISSION 95 Washington Ave. , Albany 1, New York Over 50 MPH Speed Limits Interstate Route 87 District 1 Glens Falls - Kee,seville June 8, 1961 Town Board, Town of Queensbury Warren County, New York Gentlemen: You are undoubtedly aware that the work of -installing permanent traffic signs on the recently opened section of Interstate Route 87 in the vic- inity of the City of Glens Falls is now in progress. The sign contract includes the various regulatory and warning signs, as well as the large destination signs usually associated with modern expressways of this type. A traffic control pattern for the control access expressways of the inter- state highway system includes a 60 M]PH speed limit on the expressway, Such a limit is generally consistent-with the characteristics of this type of highway, and with its intended purpose of providing for the safe and ef- ficient movement of high volumes of traffic at relatively high speeds. The signs now being installed by- contract therefore include those associ. ated with the 60 MPH limit which is normal for the interstate highway system. Since the sign work is now progressed to the point where speed limit signs are being, or shortly will be, installed, it is appropriate that we act to establish a legal speed limit of 60 MPH at this time. Also included in the .sign contract are STOP signs to control traffic exist- ing at Corinth Road, YIELD signs to control traffic s2e iting at Aviation Road, NO STOPPING signs to preclude improper parking, standing or stopping within the rest areas which have been provided for expressway motorists, and one-way arrows which are intended to preclude a tiotorist ihidvertently entering an exit ramp from Corinth Road or from Aviation Road. Use bf the one-way signs at the three exit ramps involved requires that, as a matter of technicality, these ramps be officially designated as one-wary roadways by Traffic Commission order. We have therefore issued Traffic Commission orders for the speed limit, stopping prohibition, STOP and YIELD signs and one-way designation.
