Icynene’s VOC research extends back to our early days of product innovation to limit VOC emissions and other environmental concerns. Icynene’s product stewardship has been built around comprehensive worker training, third party product testing, and involvement of leading professionals in the field of occupational health. Testing and research at the University of Saskatchewan as early as 1993 show that, with minimal ventilation (0.3 ACH) homes sprayed with Icynene were suitable for re-occupancy in 24 hours. Over the years, Icynene has developed new products and has continued to improve its existing products so that the full line of Icynene spray foams meet the most stringent VOC guidelines laid out by the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CDPH Standard Method V1.1 [CA Section 01350]). Product certifications can be found on the Berkeley Analytical Website (www.berkeleyanalytical.com). In 2013, a working committee of the American Chemistry Council – Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (ACC-CPI) developed a new protocol and measurement methods for assessing emissions from spray foam insulation in a room size chamber, Icynene was quick to use this facility for the next phase in product development. Since then, developments have been fast and furious. Four Phases of Testing & Evaluation Icynene immediately enlisted the help of the lead researcher on the ACC-CPI project to carry out the studies on its products. In addition, a leading PhD toxicologist was hired to review all results and provide checks and oversight on the findings. PHASE I : Re-Entry Testing (12 hour) PURPOSE: Investigate whether a combination of natural ventilation (e.g. open windows) together with a small fan provides enough ventilation for worker re-entry without protection in less than 24 hours. FINDINGS: Ventilation rate of as little as 1.0 ACH would allow workers to re-enter the work space in as little as 12 hours after spray. RELEVANCE: Findings meant crews could spray a new home one day and other trades could re-enter the space the next morning. PHASE II: Re-Entry Testing (4 hour) PURPOSE: Focus on whether increased ventilation rates can permit even faster re-entry. Ventilation rates were increased to 10ACH and emissions were again measured and assessed. FINDINGS: Results indicated that after four (4) hours the work area was suitable for re-entry by trades (with ventilation rate of 10 ACH). RELEVANCE: Findings meant that on jobsites that operate around the clock (e.g. commercial construction) spray activities could be arranged so that other trades could be brought into the spray area in as little as 4 hours after spray without needing PPE. DEFINITIONS Re-entry is entry into the work zone without requirement for PPE for the resumption of trades work during a normal 8 hour work day. Re-occupancy is the permanent, 24-hours-per-day return into the space by building owners/occupants. RE-ENTRY AND RE-OCCUPANCY PERIODS Times based upon ventilating during and after a spray application. Ventilation Rate (Air Changes per Hour) Re-entry period for sprayers, helpers, informed trade workers & contractors At 0.3 ACH 24 hours At 1.0 ACH 12 hours* At 10.0 ACH 4 hours* At 40.0 ACH 1 hour** Ventilation Rate (Air Changes per Hour) Re-occupancy period for all others At 0.3 ACH 24 hours At 1.0 ACH 24 hours At 10.0 ACH 24 hours At 40.0 ACH 2 hours** * Twelve (12) and four (4) hour re- entry for trades applies to all Icynene products sold in the United States. ** One (1) hour re-entry and two (2) hour re-occupancy applies only to Low VOC products (Icynene Classic Max and Icynene ProSeal). The Evolution of Insulation Icynene Inc. 6747 Campobello Road Mississauga, Ontario L5N 2L7 Canada Ph: 1.800.758.7325 • ICYNENE.COM At this point, the team realized that formulation changes might be needed to allow re-occupancy times to be reduced for permanent building occupants (i.e. homeowners) because requirements are naturally much stricter for family re-occupancy than for trades re-entry. Icynene Formulation Chemists were brought in to make adjustments to formulations to eliminate the tiny concentration of components (emissive catalysts) that were preventing a reduction in re-occupancy times. PHASE III: Re-Entry and Re-Occupancy Testing (4 hour) PURPOSE: Review performance of a combination of revised product formulations and increased ventilation rates. Ventilation rates were increased to a rate of 40.0 ACH to help meet a more stringent standard. FINDINGS: VOC emissions were low enough that, not only could workers re-enter the space without protection after four (4) hours, the space could be permanently reoccupied also. FOLLOW UP: Concentrations of the catalysts were at the lowest limits of the measurement methodology. The team had to employ other tests to confirm that the low results were really indicative of low emissions. The team believed that the results were encouraging enough that additional testing might show spaces were suitable in less than 4 hours. PHASE IV: Re-Entry (1 hour) and Re-Occupancy Testing (2 hour) PURPOSE: Extend Phase III testing and explore health concerns pertaining to VOC emissions, fire retardant emissions and unreacted isocyanates. FINDINGS: Testing confirmed that with 40 ACH ventilation and with use of Icynene’s ultra-low VOC products, the work area was safe for re-occupancy after two (2) hours and unprotected trades can enter the work area after (1) hour. RELEVANCE: Confirmed that homeowners do not have to vacate their buildings overnight if a home is sprayed during the day. Further, it raises the possibility that Icynene contractors can vacate jobsites within hours after completing spray activities. For more information, contact Icynene on 1-800-758-7325 .
