Introduction
This Planning Guide is to be used as a reference to determine parameters of
installation and steps taken to achieve a proper elevator installation. This guide
may be used by the architect, contractor, dealer or home owner. The information
in this guide is intended as an overview. Each installation will have job specific
specifications that must be followed. Do not attempt to construct a hoistway on
this information.
Elevator installation is to be done by an authorized elevator contractor, and in
accordance with installation instructions provided by the manufacturer. Installa-
tion must also be in compliance with requirements of the National Electric Code,
American Society of Mechanical Engineers safety code, and state and local building
codes. Northern Lifts Elevator Company strives to meet the requirements of
ASME-17.1 National Elevator Code for residential elevators. Northern Lifts Elevator
Company,LLC, elevators manufactured and installed under the proper parameters
are under warranty for up to 3 years. Manufacturer is not liable for any equipment
not installed in compliance with these codes.
Northern Lifts Elevator Company reserves the right to modify the design, technical
specifications and dimensions of the products shown in this document.
Planning Steps
Congratulations you have chosen a hydraulic drive system.
Please complete the steps below to finish creating your new elevator.
1 - Select rail system.
2 - Size drive system for travel range, layout machine room, and location.
3 - Choose control features and plan for electrical requirements.
4 - Address national,state,and local code requirements.
5 - Determine hoistway size,car size,layout configuration and available
options. Northern Lifts will help you in determining the available
design options: cab style,car operating panels,hall stations,phone
boxes,handrails,light fixtures,and gates.
6 -. Obtain and follow site specific field drawings..Forward all necessary
documents to contractor/builder,architect,and structural engineers.
Use job specific drawings while building hoistway, doorways,
machine room, and any other construction related to the elevator.
7 - Coordinate with you to install your new elevator.

Hoistway Specifications - Hydraulic Elevator
ATTENTION OWNER AND OR CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTOR:
Job specific documentation will be provided by Northern Lifts Elevator from which to
construct the hoistway.
All Elevator and Hoistway Requirements to be verified and or completed
by the Owner,Contractor,or Others prior to elevator installation by Northern Lifts.
1. Electrical Requirements All high voltage electrical work is to be completed by a
Qualified Electrician.See page 14 for electric requirements by others.
2. Unfinished/Un-installed Door-At the two lowest levels leave the hoistway doors
and assoiciated framing be left unfinished/un-installed to better accommodate the
elevator installation equipment and to prevent accidental damage to door and framing.
3. Plumb and Square Hoistway-Hoistway must be plumb within 1/8 inch per 10 ft.of
height and square at any point within 1/4 inch based on difference in diagonal
measurements.
4. Supportive Structure-Structure must be capable of supporting the appropriate loads.
Local engineering support is recommended.
5. Telephone Connection-Code requires a telephone connection to the elevator car;
therefore, a phone line must be installed leading to the controller.
6. ASME 17.1 Section 5.3-Hoistway to be constructed in accordance with ASME17.1
section 5.3 and all local codes..
7. Hoistway Door Security(Interlocks)-All hoistway doors require interlocks as well as a
door handle and a latch seta Interlocks will be installed by the elevator installers.
Northern Lifts recommends the use of solid core doors&or fire rated doors if required.
8. Hoistway Requirements-Any operating equipment must meet National Electric Code
and all local codes. Machine space must have a light switch and a convenience outlet.
Temperature must be maintainable between 60°-110°F and must not be exposed to
the elements(with a relative humidity not to exceed 95%).
9. No Alterations-Any alterations to the equipment without;written authorization by
Northern Lifts Elevator Company,LLC will void all warranties.
10. Pit Floor Strength-A pit floor must be designed to withstand a load of 8,000 lbs.
When used, concrete must be a minimum of 8"thick and rated at 3500 PSI.
11. Rated Load-Elevator system is rated for maximum capacity when installed.
Additions or changes to the flooring material,walls,trim,base,and/or permanent
decor added to elevator car must be subtracted from the car capacity.
12. Verify Code Requirements-Verify all national, state, and local code requirements
are all met before installation. This is the sole responsibilty of Others.

Hoistway and Elevator Car size requirements
Construction Notes:
• Use specified rail supports framed into the wall sytem.
• All measurements on the Elevator Shop Drawings are finished dimensions.
Finished dimensions include drywall, plaster and paint.
• A maximum distance of 3"is allowed between the closed hoistway door
and the outer edge of the landing sill.(See the 3 x 5 Rule on page 14)
• Determine height of hall station per local code and ADA requirements.
• Rough frame door in place with an extra inch of space on each side of the door
to allow for minor adjustments when completeing the door installations.
The example below shows the maximum and minimum sizes-for hoistways and elevator
cars rated up to 1000 lbs.The car is shown with the standard accordion saftey gates.

Elevator Electrical requirements
By General Contractor/Owner/Electrician:
Your qualified electrician and phone installer shall provide the following equipment:
Main disconnect- One(1)dedicated 208-230V single-phase power supply to a 30 Amp
fused disconnect switch with Two(2)20 Amp time-delay"FRN"fuses,(if voltage is lower than 208V
or greater than 240V,a buck-boost transformer system is required).
Lighting disconnect-One(1)dedicated 110V to 120V 15 Amp fused disconnect or circuit breaker
for the independent cab lighting circuit.
Telephone line-One(1)telephone line supplied to the elevator control cabinet.
Below are recommended manufacturers for the fused disconnect located in the machine room.
Square D
Main disconnect: 230V single-phase disconnect model#D321 N 240V-30 Amp with
In addition, two each-250V,20 Amp,&one 250V,3 Amp.All are to be FRN time delay fuses.
Separate Lighting disconnect-120V 15 Amp fused disconnect or circuit breaker.
Siemens
Main disconnect:230V single-phase disconnect model#GF321 N 240V-30 Amp with
In addition, two each-250V,20 Amp,&one 250V,3 Amp.All are to be FRN time delay fuses.
Separate Lighting disconnect-120V 15 Amp fused disconnect or circuit breaker.

Separate Lighting disconnect-120V 15 Amp fused disconnect or circuit breaker.
NOTE:Northern Lifts Elevator Company does not provide power cable to disconnects in the
elevator machine room.Recommended manufacturers for the 230V single phase 30 amp circuit
breaker at the main distribution panel(and the distribution panel itself)are listed above.
If a back-up generator is available,it is recomended that both elevator electric circuits be supplied
from the Generator distribution panel, provided that it produces the correct amount of power to run
the elevator. All electrical work and wiring must comply with applicable codes. All of the above
electrical requirements are for general reference for most projects.Custom projects with specific
requirements may change or add to the above listed equipment.
Hoistway Lights&Service Outlet: Two dedicated crcuits one for lights, light switch the other for
a GFCI service outlet are to be installed in the hoistway. The GFCI service outlet, light and light switch
are to be installed in a lower corner area of the hoistway,24"above the pit floor.Wall lights are to be
installed vertically in the hoistway at specific locations.Lights are only to be controlled by the switch
in the hoistway.
