Box 4547 Building Codes Energy Codes Q ueensb New York 12804 Septic Design HVAC Dear Paul, I inspected the site of the new metal building, with you, to be erected at the Honda dealer premises on Quaker Road. I covered the base shear, design drift and overturning forces-on.the building columns in my letter to you of = March 10, 2004. During our recent inspection of the area, it became obvious the native rock would interfere with the concrete pier placement on the East side columns. The rock outcropping in this area will have to be drilled and anchors installed in it to provide the necessary restraint for the new piers. My recommendation for this work would be four (4) 5/8" or 3/4" diameter anchors installed a minimum of 12" into the rock for each pier. The drill size is to be 1/8" larger in diameter than the diameter of the anchor---5/8" diameter anchors need a 3/4" diameter hole and 3/4" anchors a 7/8" diameter hole. The anchors should be sufficiently long with their top 3" bent at a 90 degree angle to go over the bent portion of the anchor bolts (approx. 20"- 28")---use threaded rod or re-bar 5/8" or 3/4" in diameter. The holes must be clean, dry and contain no debris or oil residue. Use the new Simpson adhesive "Acrylic-Tie", which may be installed in temperatures down to zero degrees and will cure in 4 hours at 40 deg. or 1 hour at 60 deg. The Simpson "Epoxy-Tie" adhesive may be used, but temperature should be above 40 degrees and cure time will be 2 to 3 days. Mixed epoxy material can harden in the nozzle in 5-7 minutes at 40 degrees---the "Acrylic-Tie" will probably be the better choice. The holes should be drilled to the specified diameter--=3/44" for 5/8" anchors of 7/8" for %" anchors. All dust must be removed with oil-free compressed air (or other pressurized dispenser) and cleaned out with.a nylon brush. Fill the holes halfway, starting with the bottom of the hole and withdraw nozzle as the hole fills up. Anchors must be clean and oil.free, installed-turning slowly until the anchor hits the bottom of the hole, and not disturbed during the cure time. The allowable load, based on. steel strength, is 5,878 lbs for the 5/8" dia. anchor and 8,460 lbs. for the 3/a" anchor in tension and 3,025 lbs. for the 5/8" anchor and 4,360 lbs. for the %" anchor in shear. Either the 5/8" anchors or the 3/a" anchors should do the job, with four (4) for each pier. The. adhesives can be supplied by. other manufacturers, but I don't know them or have their catalogs. Wallace Supply, in South Glens Falls, is probably the best local source for anchor and adhesives (or for. additional information). Sincerely.yours, William E. Box 4547 Renovation Pumps and Queensbury, New York 12804 MAR 2004 Piping HVAC TOWN OF ClUEENSBURY Energy Dear Paul, UlLD1NG`NoUE Compliance COMERCIAL& I am returning the 34 page master document from the American Buildings RESIDENTIAL Building Codes Company showing the 36ft. x 72ft.- metal building which the Sporting. Energy Codes Honda/Kawasaki dealer is planning to construct on Quaker Road in Septic Design HVAC Queensbury, New York. I have spent quite a bit of time going through these American Buildings Co. drawings and the Building Code of New York State looking, in particular, for wind overturning, wind uplift and seismic considerations affecting this structure. American Buildings has included 16 rigid-frame columns (4 of them portal columns), two diagonally guyed endwalls and a 2-set-diagonal portal frame section under the roof. The New York code gives a method for determining the Main Windforce-Resisting System Loading Diagram (page 307) using values from Table 1609.6.2.1(1) and from Table 1609.2.1(4). The code also refers to the ASCE 7, the minimum design loads for buildings and other structures (American Society of' Civil Engineers) for wind calculations. I have a copy of this manual, but have used only the Building Code of New York State to do wind and seismic calculations, to date. The total Main Windforce-Resisting System, using my calculations for the Transverse Section, amounts to an overturning force of 4,450 lbs. on one long wall and the endwall corner. The endwall diagonals, the portal frame diagonals and 28 %2" dia. anchor bolts in the plane of one long wall should be able to resist this overturning force. The individual.roof panels have CL- .15 web crippling clips on all purlins and anti-roll clips (drwg.#DWR-1.0) installed as shown on the roof framing plan (drwg.#E-04). The only additional roof panel reinforcement I could find to help resist a wind uplift would be Frame Brace (BR17) and Knee Brace (BR18), drwg.#-DND-1.0. The greatest vertical live down load is the 53 PSF snow load. Pier footings, if limited to 3,000 PSF, will resist the vertical live down load plus the vertical dead down load of 153,000 lbs. (total combined) if no pier footing supports more than 3,000 lbs. per sq.ft. The only two pier footings supporting more than 3,000 lbs. per sq.ft. are the two on column line #2. These two footings should be a minimum of 32" x 30". The seismic loading is in the same general area as the addition you did for the Valvoline building. The limestone in the Honda dealership area is very close to the ground surface. The new metal building is in Seismic Use Group I, its Site Class. is "D" and other seismic information is provided (according to page #1 data in the American Buildings Co. drawings). The simplified analytical procedure for seismic design of buildings is covered in . Section 1617.5 of the New York code: Seismic base shear is determined by equation V = 1.2 Sds W R V = 15,300# bld.+ 27,480# snow) = 1.2 x .36 x 42,860 4 = 4,6301bs. Vertical Distribution for a single story = same (4,630 lbs.) Design Drift = 1% of height (16ft.+) = 2" The twenty-eight (28) 1/2" dia. anchor bolts in the long plane of the building should handle the base shear, the design drift, and the overturning force with an ample safety factor. Hopefully, some added bracing and the enlargement of two pier footings will provide enough additional resistance for the wind uplift and for the total down weight of building & snow loads. I could not charge for all of the hours I've put into this proj ect, but have learned more of the code. Please consider this an invoice in the amount of $200 for my services. Let me know if you have any quesiions. Sincerely yours, Villiam E. MontgomeryJ.
