Comment: The proposed change, requiring consent 'of 60% of the nearby
property owners. is suggested in response to the dilemma posed last fall
by the mandated approval of plans for the filling station on the south-
east corner of Ridge and Quaker Roads., despite objections from both
residential and manufacturing interests nearby.
10" Kushner rnad,~;, 'the following statement:
I £oUí1.d Supervisor Solomon IS "hot under the collar" remarks regarding
the Y~tropolitan Planning Board in his January 8 reply rather contradictoryo
Mro Solomon stated, ''Mro Kushner was relieved of his duties of representing
our. town on the Metropolitan Planning Board for decisions not in the best
interest of the tmm..." 0 This is most interesting when compared ,.·lith his
statements of November 14, 19680 At that time the Tmm Board withdrew
its support from the Metropolitan Board to "participate directly with the
1-1s1::ren. County Planning Board on all matters concerning intermunicipal
or county planning involving the Town of Queensburyo" Subsequently, Mr"
Solomon stated that. flThe Town Boards I s action in no 'r¡(jay reflects on the
work being done by the dedicated members of the Metropolitan Planning Board.!:
All the parties closely involved with the Metro ßoard were quite aware
that) in fact, the work being done by the dedicated maubers" was exactly
the reason support was withdrawn and it took only a "hot under ~;hc collar"
remark over a year later to publicly confit¿n our thoughtso
t>lh&t then was the action taken by the Metro Board that caused the with.,.
drawal of support? It was . specificålly. the }Ietro Boarcß3 rec<h"M4endation
of ~cceptQnce of alternate Test Plan G for major street and highway
improvement. in the Metropolitan area. It was felt that Plan G would
be of the greatest benefit to all 8 communities represented by the Metro
BOßrd~ 1"1811 G 't,¡as also the recommendation of the State DepartillP..D.t of
Transportation and so as recently as lsst month, the endorsem.ent,of Plan
G was reaffirmed by the state to the Warren County Board of Suparvisorso
Prior to the endorsement by the Metro Board, Mr.. Solomon had attempted
to influence my deeis10n towar~ Pl61\ C. which I felt was both impractical
and served a limited interesto If Mr.. Solomon would like to enga.ge in a
discussion of the relative mer,its of both plans. I would be pleased to
participate.
t~hat concerns me the most is the. attempt to silence divergent opinions 0
If government is to be dynamic and responsive to the demands of today and
tomor¿:CM, it should not only welcome bu.t ~ourag~ new ideas .and approaches
to the problems of local government. The Metropolitan Board "'4S one of
those attempts to take s. new look at possible methods for solving tbe
gr~#i~~ problems of local government. I hope that our electedSuparvisor
w1.11 encourage individual thought among those serving tbe towntl Thought
stúmlates f stimula~ion leads to vi.tality and vitalit)· is a pre<òOrequisite
of effective government.
