Design Cases
CASE 1 - ROUND STRUCTURES
GENERAL: Round structures are unique in that under normal loading conditions (when the struc-
ture is below grade) the lateral forces acting on the wall surface create only compres-
sion stresses in the concrete wall. Since concrete is strong in compression, round
structures are very efficient to use underground. However when a large differential in
lateral pressure on opposite sides of the structure occurs, tensile stresses may be real-
ized. While normal traffic (e.g. AASHTO H20-44) does not create a significant pressure
differential, other loadings, such as buildings or railroad traffic, may cause large
differentials. In such cases, a special design should be prepared.
The top slab, bottom slab, cone, cover and cover-start ring rare the components that re-
quire the greatest attention. Standard designs are provided for the cases illustrated in
Figure D-1 and listed below. For loadings other than these, a special design that ac-
counts for the unique conditions will be necessary.
