Dear Dear Mr.Pasco:
I've completed my review of the proposed solar panel installation on the house at the subject location. Per
your request,I determined whether the existing rafter configurations would adequately support the
additional solar panel weight. I also calculated expected rooftop wind loads for this building at this
location.
According to information you provided,panels are proposed to be installed on two main house roof
planes with the following characteristics:
Roofs 1&2- 5:12 pitched main house roof planes framed with 2x8 rafters spaced 16"on center.
The rafters are overlain with plywood sheathing and a single layer of asphalt shingles. The
horizontal rafter span is 14'-6". The rafter bottoms are unfinished.
Additional roof details are provided on the enclosed calculation sheets.
The solar panels will be Q-Peak Duo Blk-G6 mounted to aluminum racking. The racking will be Iron
Ridge XR100 rail mounted to the roof with Iron Ridge Flashfoot bases,which use integral flashing and a
5/16"diameter lag screw to secure the array to the rafters below.
A summary of my evaluation follows:
First the existing roof dead loads (rafters, sheathing,roofing, etc..)were determined.
According to the solar panel manufacturer's information,each panel is approx 3.4' x 5.7' and weighs 44
lbs. The panels will be grouped into an array positioned on the roof in a southerly facing
orientation. Since there will be several,relatively small point loads distributed over the surface of the
roof,this was treated as a distributed load. The solar array dead load was determined to be 2.7 psf,
including the racking.
The live loads (snow loads)were then determined using the procedures in ASCE 7-10. Since the panels
will lie close to, and parallel with,the roofline,there isn't expected to be an increase in snow load as a
result of the placement of the panels. A ground snow load of 50 psf was used. Site specific exposure
conditions were determined using GIS aerial imagery.

Next,the bending strength and deflection were calculated and compared to the rafter strength values. The
rafter grade stamp indicates the lumber species is grade#1 western cedar-hemlock.
The wind load was then calculated using the procedures in ASCE 7-10. There are several factors which
effect wind load,and these are stated on the enclosed calculations. A 115-mph wind speed(3-sec gust)
was used for the analysis.
Conclusions&Recommendations:
Based on the above,the existing rafters are adequate to withstand the additional solar panel load.
The calculated rooftop wind load for this building in this location was determined to be 19.3 psf. The
resulting shear and uplift forces are shown on the enclosed calculation sheets.
It is imperative that the contractor provide appropriate flashing or other watertight seal around all roof
penetrations. Further,the panels must be installed in a manner which does not restrict the normal roof
drainage patterns. All system components must be installed in accordance with manufacturer's
instructions. While consideration was given to snow drifting,it is highly recommended that you not
allow excessive snow or ice buildup on the roof,as with any roof.
