Based on a review of the aforementioned document and conversations with the U-Haul representative the following rational for not requiring smoke and fire roof vents is offered: 1. The entire building will be provided with a sprinkler system with a head placed over each rental space and in the halls. The system will be alarmed to the County Sheriff's Department. 2. There are no generally accepted design standards for structures with both vents and sprinklers. 3. The proposed structure will not be heated and therefore it will not be of air tight construction and as such will be self ventilating. 4. The building will have a layer of fiberglass insulation under the roof. Based on the above it is suggested that smoke and heat roof vents are not only not necessary but may even be a detriment to the overall fire protection of the structure. Comfort venting is not likely to be needed since the structure is not of an air tight construction and roof insulation is being provided. There will, however, be six (6) vents placed in the roof (3 over each hallway) to prevent the build up of any odors which may be inadvertently caused by stored materials.
