COMMUNICATIONS ANI) REMARKS FROM VISITORS
Vice Chairman Carusone welcomed the two visitors who indicated that they did not wish
to speak on any particular topic.
The items of correspondence included in the monthly packet were briefly reviewed and
there was discussion on the New York State Parks and Recreation letter (Hudson River
Park). The director explained that the project documentation previously submitted by
the department was being questioned. Consequently, the town's reimbursement check
had been temporarily withheld. However, after a phone call to reiterate the details, this
situation had been remedied. The other items of correspondence were reviewed and
the Glens Falls Flyers letter and the department's response were discussed. A number
of commissioners suggested that the department notify the Flyers as soon as possible
with regard to future school usage and how this might impact the Flyers organization.
The director agreed and will respond to Mr. Crandall before the May meeting. The
department's letter to Dr. Harmon, which had previously been copied to all
commissioners, was also reviewed and there were no further comments.
Recreation Commission Survey
Vice Chairman Carusone suggested that each commissioner read aloud their Recreation
Commission Survey Program-Facility ideas for the record.
Commissioner LaBombard outlined 6 items including: a second swimming pool,
additional town tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, outdoor handball court, develop
Hiland/Halfway Brook land and increased marketing.
Commissioner Hersh read a short paragraph on future expansion and park development
which he further summarized into two thoughts: develop big park for more family
usage and preserve green space. Commissioner Auer indicated that the town's efforts
should be directed in the area of purchasing and developing a portion of the Indian
Ridge area which adjoins the school area. Increasing publicity/marketing and passive
activities were indicated by Commissioner Schachner as being an important focus for
the future and Commissioner Maine pointed out that a pole barn for skating and walking
trails with handicapped access were his recommendations.
A four-page synopsis of the department's program-facility recommendations including
facility cost estimates and national park and open space standards were distributed and
reviewed and it was the consensus that a special workshop meeting to develop and
finalize the commission's list of recommendations be scheduled. A 5:00 PM meeting on
Thursday, April 15th was agreed on and the director will send a reminder notice to all
commissioners beforehand.
NEW BUSINESS
Commissioner Auer relayed a request from Dan Drellos regarding possible use of
department forces/equipment to maintain the Queensbury Little League fields. The
director pointed out because the fields were situated on school grounds (leased by the
Little League) that the use of Town personnel and equipment was prohibited.
Furthermore, the director mentioned that although the board might consider authorizing
it, this type of usage on property not owned or leased by the town would be
questionable.

Commissioner Auer also indicated that John Dwyer, representing the Adirondack Youth
Soccer League, was interested in meeting to discuss future usage at Ridge/Jenkinsville
Park. The director explained he had been in contact with Mr. Dwyer and that additional
meetings were planned.
MONTHLY DEPARTMENT REPORT
The staff presented a brief verbal monthly report highlighting the adult softball leagues,
the Hovey Pond timeline canopy (picture distributed), the school pool incident (lockers
vandalized) and the Hudson River Park (HRP) project.
The director was requested to send a informational letter to the New York State Office
of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation regarding HRP and the termination of the
original contractor (NuTech Industries).
There being no further business, the commission meeting was adjourned at 8:17 PM
The next meeting will be held on May 4, 1999, beginning at 7:00 PM, in the Supervisor's
Conference Room (#37), at the Queensbury Town Office Building.
