These characteristics are determined by spe- cific industry-wide standard Lest. Flange Spread refers to the surface burning and smoke development of a product, and fire resistance refers to the time rating of an entire assembly. Individual components of an assembly are never considered fire resistant by themselves. FLAME SPREAD Products are given a flame spread index as a result of their surface burning characteristics as determined by Test Method ASTM E 84. material is placed in a tunnel-like apparetus and a flame is introduced at one end with a standard amount of draft. The distance of flame travel per unit of time is used to calculate the flame spread index. The amount of smoke generated is also measured and the smoke index or smoke developed number is determined. For reference, inorganic rein- forced cement board is assigned_a flame spead rating of zero (0) and seasoned red oak is assigned a flame spread of 100.
