SPECIAL WORKSHOP
APRIL 14, 1993
Summary of the Recreation Commission workshop held Wednesday, April
14, 1993, at the Queensbury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New
York. Chairman Simmonds called the workshop to order at 7:02 p.m.
PRESENT:
Commissioners Auer, Hersh, Labatore, Maine and
Simmonds
ALSO
PRESENT:
Director Hansen
VISITORS:
Mary Sperry and a number of individuals in support
of a BMX racing facility
Chairman Simmonds welcomed a group of parents and children (8-10
individuals) who were present to request the Commission's support
with regards to the possible sale or lease of Town land (to their
group), for the purpose of creating a BMX track facility. Mary
Sperry, as the group spokeswoman, explained and detailed BMX track
racing and showed a short video on the subject. She mentioned the
lack of BMX facilities (only 6 in N. Y. S. ), and reminded the
Commission that last fall a number of commission members had
visited the closest BMX track in Rotterdam. She pointed out that
the Rotterdam track was built and operated, entirely, by volunteers
and that the racing fee paid nightly by participants, helped to
defray the cost of operating the facility. She explained a variety
of BMX track related information including; insurance/liability,
equipment, facility specifications and volunteer involvement. A
number of other group members also commented on BMX track racing
and provided the Commission with added information. In summary,
the group was requesting the Commission's support and assistance
(in order to buy or lease Town property), so that their volunteer
organization could construct, operate and maintain a BMX track
facility in the Queensbury area.
The commission questioned the group on a variety of items related
to the BMX facility and the Director was instructed to research
(Town Attorney), the possibility of a lease/sale arrangement
between the Town and this group. Chairman Simmonds thanked the
group for their input and pledged to respond to their request as
quickly as possible.
