QUEENSBUR Y RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF MEETING
JULY 8. 1991
Minutes of the regular meeting of the Recreation Commission of the Town of Queensbury,
held Monday, July 8, 1991, at the Queensbury Town Office Building, Queensbury, New
York. Chairman Simmonds called the meeting to order at 7:09 p.m.

TOUR OF STATE/TOWN PROPERTY
Immediately after the meeting was called to order/roll call, those in attendance boarded
the Supervisor's vehicle (van) and proceeded to the 28 acre State owned parcel, off
Cleverdale Road, in North Queensbury. The site includes almost 500' of frontage on Lake
George and has been classified by the State of New York as "wild forest."
The group briefly reviewed the maps of the area and then walked the western half of the
property which borders Cleverdale Road. The majority of this portion of the property
includes sparse vegetation, as well as a moderate growth stand of both hard and softwoods.
This area was easily accessible and seemed to be ideal for the development of passive
recreation facilities including picnic/cookout areas and nature trails. Those in attendance
were also able to view and evaluate a portion of the Lake George shoreline which is the
northern border of the property.
Those in attendance then proceeded to the eastern half of the State property and the
Town's parcel off Rockhurst Road. The Town owned parcel (2.07 acres), abuts the State
parcel on this side and is completely landlocked (private owner, State parcel and Lake
George). This half of the parcel (State property), as well as the Town property were
noticeably "wet and thick" with heavy, low vegetation. It was obvious, this portion of
the site would require extensive filling and work in order to facilitate usage. Therefore,
it seems unlikely, because of the nature of the site (wetland) that the State would allow
any development, whatsoever.
The Director distributed copies of his 10/17/86 (rough draft), Development Plan for the
Lake George (Sandy Bay) Property and reviewed the history as well as the data included
in this plan. After further comments and considerable discussion, it was the Commission's
-2-
recommendation that the Director resubmit the '86 Development Plan and request the
Supervisor to pursue the status of this plan with ENCON.
COMMUNICATION AND REMARKS FROM VISITORS
The Director briefly reviewed the items of correspondence which were included in the
monthly packet. He advised the Commission that he would be responding in writing to
Mr. Horowitz in a "professional manner," in order to set the record straight on those items
which were inaccurately stated (written). He assured the Commission that he would not
get into a so-called "name calling letter," but instead would only deal in fact. On the
other subject (Byers letter), he reported that Pat's response done with his approval, was
both factual and necessary.
Ass't. Director, Lovering, updated the Commission on many of the summer programs and
reported that participation/registration figures were excellent.
There being no further business, the Commission was adjourned at 8:40 p.m. The next
meeting will be held on August 12, 1991, at 7:00 p.m., in the Supervisor's meeting room
(#37), at the Town Office Building.
