Minutes of the October 5, 2010 regular meeting of the Recreation Commission of
the Town of Queensbury held at the Town of Queensbury Supervisor's Conference
Room
Chairman LaBombard called the meeting to order at 7: 05pm
Roll Call:
• Present— Conboy, Fusco, Irish, LaBombard, White
• Excused— Mott, Maine
• Staff—Director Lovering,
• Guests--None
Approval of Minutes:
It was moved by Commissioner Irish , seconded by Commissioner Conboy, to
approve the minutes from the September 7, 2010 meeting. Discussion: Spelling
error—should be "Reports not Reports". Also Safe and Quality Cycling should be
listed as a standard Committee report. Question called for--All members present
approved.
Communications and Remarks from Visitors: (see file for copies)
• Monthly Correspondence
• Letter to Director Lovering from Leon Steves of the QLC thanking
him for the work done on the parking area of the Van Dusen Preserve
on West Mountain Road
• Series of e-mails between Commission members regarding the ice
skating rink at the school (see later discussion)
• E-mail from Secretary of Friends of Hovey Pond regarding scheduled
meeting this fall to discuss future plans
• Memo from Lori O'Shaughnessy to Hooper intermediate basketball
coaches regarding elimination of the program-brief discussion as to
any negative feedback
• Letter from Director Lovering to Superintendent of Schools Huntley
thanking the school for continued support and use of facilities
• Year to date budget report dated 10/1/2010
Unfinished Business
• Gurney Lane Recreation Area update—Director Lovering—distance for
contour lines at a minimum of one foot are necessary to produce accurate
drawings. Also area to be surveyed includes entire future development area
mapped by Jim Miller
• Hovey Pond Park Improvements—Director Lovering—improvements
consisted of benchs and tables stone border around gardens, curbing around
monument, signage, and parking lot stripping. Work to be done in 2010 and
2011. Total budget is $17,000. Discussion of condition of memorial signs,
costs and who should pay.
• Hudson Pointe Nature Preserve, sign project—Director Lovering—update
on the sign project showing various amenities of the Preserve. Cost of
$9463.
• Meadowbrook Preserve Trail System—Director Lovering—trail
development and final approval is still pending from the Army Corps of
Engineers. Goal for this exemplary trail system is for completion by next
summer (2011).
• 2011 Department Budget—no changes from last meeting. Town has until
Oct. 29 to modify and/or change Supervisor's tentative budget.
New Business
• Gurney Lane Mountain Bike Trails—project to expand existing trail system
while providing single track trails for mountain biking. Minimum costs with
much benefit.
• Ice Skating at Queensbury School—discussion on pros and cons of keeping
the rink at school. General consensus was to explore an alternative for an
ice skating rink either at Hovey Pond or elsewhere.
