COMMUNICATIONS/CORRESPONDENCE None MEETING DATES FOR 1983 There was some discussión regarding the Commission meeting dates for 1983. It was decided that the meeting date for December be moved up to December 12th rather than the usual fourth Monday. The other dates (fourth Monday of every month) were all approved and the Director will have the notice of meeting dates typed and distributed at the next meeting. NEW PROGRAMS DISCUSSION The Director initiated a discussion regarding new programs the Department desires to organize this winter. Mr. Frank Miller has approached the Director with a request for a peewee wrestling program in Queensbury. Mr. Miller has Recreation Commission Minutes cont'd page 2 organized and conducted such a program at St. Mary's School and would be extremely interested in establishing a similiar program with the Recreation Department. Mr. ~1iller hopes to have the Department co-sponsor this instructional program for boys 6-l2 years of age, at the Oueensbury High School wrestling facility. The program would begin in January and continue for 14 weeks on Saturday mornings from 9 to l2 noon. Boys would be divided by age group and would recieve 1 hour worth of instructional assist- ance and practice in wrestling (no fee to participate). After some discussion regarding adequate supervision, salary and budget limitations the Commission approved the Director's rec- commendation to co-sponsor this program and instructed the Director to make the necessary arrangements with Mr. Miller and Oueensbury School building personnel. The Director also explained the couples volleyball program which the Department will attempt to initiate this winter. This adult program will also be offered at the High School, however, a fee to offset the cost of equipment and supervision will be charg- ed all p~rticipants. The program will be offered one or two nights per week lor 12 weeks (2 hours per night) and will begin as soon as school usage is granted. The Commission approved the program concept and authorized the Director to proceed. DIRECTOR'S REPORT The Commission reviewed the Director's Report and there was some discussion regarding vehicle problems and winter programs. Mr. Morrell questioned why the Department does not offer ski trips to West MOuntain and it was explained that such trips had been scheduled in the past but due to the proximity of West Mountain, the response in the past had been nil. The Department offers a ski lesson package for children and adults at West Mountain and this seems to be adequate. The Director updated the Commission regarding the West Glens Falls neighborhood park and it was explained that the Department has now assumed the majority of responsibility for the development of this area. B.O.C.E.S. has been contacted and has agreed to clear and help develop the area this spring. The Director must still coordinate with Pat Tatich and Niagara Mohawk concerning right of way clearance but it is anticip~ted that the area should be usable this summer. The Director will also at- tempt to organize West Glens Falls residents to assist with plan- ning this park. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:44 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Monday, January 24th 1983.
