The following summarized the mechanical HVAC issues I foresee and my suggestion for
handling each:
1) Ventilation: - Provisions for introduction of outside air(O/A) for ventilation are
required. I would suggest a minimum of 150 CFM outside air be provided to both the
first floor and first floor and second floor for this purpose. This can be provided by
small intake louver in wall (located somewhere where cold-drafts will not cause *
issues' )-and a wall exhaust fan that could normally operate during occupied hours.
This will be a very small exhaust fan (like±12"0) and can be strategically located to
help out with some general fume exhaust from areas like ovens and welding. This
could be installed in such a way as to also fulfill any requirements for dedicated
exhaust system in these areas.
Alternatively, a small O/A intake fan can be provided to-discretely supply this small
vol'ume of air to the spaces. This should not require heating, but may cause a drafty
or cool area.
2) Mechanical Heat and Smoke Vents:.—These are not required under F-1 occupancy
for a building of this size.
3) Bathroom Exhaust Fans: A direct exhaust fan is required in all bathrooms with a
minimum exhaust rate of 75 CFM per water closet or urinal. This has to be direct to
outside exhaust although does not need to operate continuously. There are many
- styles/sizes of inexpensive cabinet fans available for this purpose.
4) Weldina Fumes: I find no specific requirement that welding fumes must be
exhausted directly; but the general requirement is that fumes generated from any
equipment or process"which emits heat, odors, fumes, spray, gas or smoke in such
quantities as to be irritating or injurious to health and safety" shall have an exhaust
system provided for. Obviously there is room for interpretation' here, and-if a specific
interior welding fume collector/precipitator is available, the case can be made with
buildings department that the issue is being addressed.
Alternatively, as stated in item 1 above, perhaps we locate a small exhaust fan in the
area of the welding equipment and meet the ventilation requirement and the exhaust
request With one fan.
