Dear Tom,
Harry Williams asked me to designate a laminated wood beam which
would replace the steel W10x26 beam called for by Joseph W .
Collura Associates on their Sheet #A-1 for the Addition to the
Drummerboy Christmas Shop . The use classification for this
retail shop is C2 Mercantile and the floor live load required by
the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code is
75 lbs . per sq . ft . for upper floors .
The minimum wood construction required to replace the W10x26
steel beam would be three (3) 1 3/4"x16" Micro Lam beams . These
would limit deflection to 1/240 of the span . These three
members will have to be fastened together as spedified by Truss
Joist Corp . in their Micro Lam manual . It will be impracticable
to find a wood replacement member that will finish flush in the
floor joist system for a single span .
