Dear Mr.O'Brien:
The referenced site was visited-on this date to evaluate the structural capacity of 3 second
floor joists that have been compromised by the drilling of large holes out in the middle of the span.
The joists, in question are 2"W' members at 16" oc, however large holes have been drilled
through the members and in one case the hole actually breached the bottom of the joist_ The recom-
mended remedy is to sister a new 2"W'to the side of the affected members and glue and screw them
to the existing member. All future soil lines must be placed below the joists so as to not weaken the
floor structure.
It is recommended that thicker steel plates be installed at the tops of the bearing beam posts to
prevent crushing of the wood.
