STRUCTURAL STEEL TO BE GALVANIZED AS PER THE FOLLOWING: • SURFACE PREPARATION: THE MATERIAL SHOULD BE CAUSTIC CLEANED, IF REQUIRED, AND PICKLED TO SSPC SP8 (OR ALTERNATIVELY BLAST CLEANED TO SSPC SP5 WHITE METAL) AND FLUXED IN AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF ZINC AMMONIUM. • GALVANIZE STEEL MEMBERS, FABRICATIONS, AND ASSEMBLIES AFTER FABRICATION BY THE HOT DIP PROCESS IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM A123. • GALVANIZE BOLTS, NUTS, AND WASHERS AND IRON AND STEEL HARDWARE COMPONENTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM A153. • HANDLE ALL ARTICLES TO BE GALVANIZED IN SUCH MANNER AS TO AVOID ANY MECHANICAL DAMAGE AND TO MINIMIZE DISTORTION. • BOLTED CONNECTIONS SHALL BE DISASSEMBLED PRIOR TO GALVANIZING. • ALL DRIPS, SPATTERS, RUNS, OVERBUILD, AND SHARP AREAS TO BE HAND -FILED SMOOTH. • COATING WEIGHT: CONFORM TO PARAGRAPH 5.1 OF ASTM A123 OR TABLE 1 OF ASTM A153, AS APPROPRIATE. • SURFACE FINISH: THE FINAL COATING SURFACE SHALL BE CONTINUOUS, REASONABLY SMOOTH, MONOCHROMATIC IN COLOR AND AS EVENLY DISTRIBUTED AS POSSIBLE AS PERMITTED BY THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE OBJECT BEING GALVANIZED. THE GALVANIZED PRODUCT SHALL BE FREE FROM UNCOATED AREAS, BLISTERS AND OTHER SURFACE APPEARANCE /ADHESION DEFECTS. • ADHESION: THE FINAL COATING SHALL WITHSTAND NORMAL HANDLE OF THE OBJECT WITHOUT DAMAGE THE SURFACE FINISH INCLUDING PEELING OR FLAKING. • REPAIRS TO CORRECT BARE AREAS RESULTING FROM FAULTY GALVANIZING MAY ONLY BE DONE IF AREAS ARE INFREQUENT, SMALL, AND SUITABLE FOR REPAIR. REPAIRS SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM A780, METHOD A3, METAUZING. THE THICKNESS OF METAUZING SHALL EXCEED THE THICKNESS REQUIRED FOR THE ADJACENT MATERIAL. THE REPAIR SHALL BE TESTED FOR ADHESION AND FINISH SO THAT THE APPEARANCE IS SIMILAR TO THE ADJACENT GALVANIZING. • REPAIR DAMAGED AREAS BY ONE OF THE APPROVED METHODS IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM A780 AND THE PRODUCT MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS.
