Memo to file :
Re : Septic installations - Ron Grimes , Contractor
The last two installations of septic Systems at Sutton ' s
on Rte . 9 , had some minor problems that can easily be remedied .
In the area surrounding dry - weZZs ( or leach - pits ) , it is
important that the stone used is of proper size and free of
soil . The purpose of this stone is to filter the liquid from
the septic tank . If the stone is too large , there is no filter -
inrg and the liquid flogs directly to the soil, surrounding ,
carrying some solids that will plug the soil . It fob jows that
if the stone is too smaZZ , or contains large quantities of soil ,
the solids will fill the small voids and plug the absorption
area sooner . The obvious way to avoid these problems is to
use the recommended size of clean stone ; which is as fot tows :
For absorption fields ( tile fields ) - - Washed gravel or crushed
stone 314 - 1a inches may be used as aggregate for the trench .
Larger or smaZZer substances are not satisfactory , Run - of- bank
agraveZ is unacceptable . ( # 2 stone veccommended )
For seepage pits - - The space between the Zining and the excavation
wall should be filled to the level of the inlet pipe with 314 to
21- inch size crushed stone or washed gravel . Again , run - of- bank
gravel is unacceptable . ( # 3 stone is reccommended . )
Most important is that all septic liquid be directed through
the system in such a way that none escapes into the soil until
it reaches the area designed for absorption .
