Between the stepped foundation lines, the excavation was completed and stepped in general conformance with the grades shown on Foundation Section A of Drawing 5.0. Photographs showing the foundation excavation and the formwork in place are attached. The soil conditions exposed in the foundation excavation and at the bearing level of the foundations were consistent with those encountered in the test borings advanced to investigate the site's subsurface conditions and which were reported in the Geotechnical Evaluation prepared for the project by C.T. Male Associates. At foundation grade, natural granular soils were observed to be present and typically consisted of fine to medium sand containing lesser and varying amounts of silt, coarser sand and gravel. Small cobbles were also present which reportedly made it difficult to drive pins into the ground to support the foundation forms. Photographs attached to this report show cobbles on the surface of the excavation benches between the north and south foundation lines. The exposed foundation grades and the base of the excavation benches were dry and stable, and appeared to be firm, although not mechanically compacted. At the southwest corner of the excavation,it was reported that a dry well was present, removed and the portion of its removal that extended below foundation grade backfilled with the on-site granular soils. It was reported by Dean Hyatt that the backfill was placed in 12-inch lifts and each lift well compacted. It is understood that an independent testing laboratory, Construction Technologies,is being retained to perform compaction tests on the bearing grade of the west foundation. Collectively, barring inadequate compaction test results, all foundation grades were judged to be suitable for the placement of reinforcing steel and casting of foundations. C.T. MALE ASSOCIATES Page 2 of 2 Daily Site Observation Report (continued) Along the east side of the foundation excavation, sheets of plastic had been placed to guard against erosion of the soils along the excavation side and which supported foundations of an adjacent building. An encased fiber optic line running between the north and south foundation lines was temporarily supported as shown in the attached photographs. Lean concrete to be placed on the excavation benched will encase this line. Recommendations made at the site included: -Submission of compaction test results to C.T. Male for review and comment. -Removal of cobbles present on surface of excavation benches between north and south foundation lines before placing lean concrete on the benches. -After casting foundation along west side and stripping of the foundation forms, place backfill to top-of-footing elevation. Items to Verify: Continued observation of the stability of excavation side slopes and support of building bordering the east side of the foundation excavation.
