Dear Mr. Hatin :
On November 5, 1990, Tom Albrecht and I inspected the home of
Sandy and Carl Baker at 20 Owens Avenue. The original 8" block
basement wall at the rear of the building has bowed-in for
several inches, evidently from earth pressure during premature -
backfilling . The Bakers have not noticed any further movement
in the wall during the time they have owned the home.
Conditions are now changing with the additional construction
taking place. The middle third of this wall will no longer have
any earth pressure against it because of the new basement area
• at this point. There will be additional floor loading imposed
upon it but this will be partially offset by redistribution of
,roof and upper story loading .
Tom Albrecht has agreed to improve stability of this wall at (3)
three places in the following manner:

' 1 . When the poured wall for the garage was installed
against the basement wall , holes were punched in the -
existing blocks and hooked rebars were placed from the
• concrete wall into the block wall . When the existing window
is removed at this wall intersection , mortar will be rodded
into the block cavities to tie the rebar hooks to the block
wall . This should tie the block wall and the concrete wall
together.
2. Where supports are installed under laminated beams below
the new 2nd story addition , a steel column will be cut into
the existing block wall to carry these loads to the
foundation at the stairway area.

3 . Where the new poured basement wall, abuts the existing
block wall on the other side of the stairway area, a
vertical concrete pilaster will be constructed . This
pilaster will be approximately 6" wide and project 8" into
the existing basement area. Two (2) No . 6 rebars will be
anchored in the basement floor and extend full length of the
pilaster, which will be incorporated at its upper area with
the filling-in of the existing window.
I am enclosing a sketch outlining these 3 wall modifications .
With the earthen backfill removed from the middle third of the
wall and the wall-stability improvements done as outlined above,
I believe the existing 8" block wall will remain in its present
position . Please let me know if you need additional input
regarding this wall problem.
