Dear John,
Mike Burke of BBB Construction informed me that the northwest foundation pier of the
sunroom addition was not positioned to permit a"U"type saddle anchor for the grade
beam. On July 19th, I visited the site to survey the condition and take field
measurements. I recalculated the uplift on the beam/pier due to wind load on the west
elevation and find it to be approximately 810 pounds. The 3"wide x 5"high x 4"
horizontal, 16+/-gage metal angle is sufficient to resist the load,providing the %2"
diameter bolts are properly installed. The %2"diameter expansion bolt into the pier is in
place but the 1/2" diameter lag into the grade beam needs to be positioned in a horizontal
position and fully drawn into the member, flush against the steel angle. The present bolt
may have to be taken out, a new hole drilled, and the bolt reinstalled to provide proper
anchorage. When properly installed the beam/pier connection will have a capacity 2520
pounds of uplift resistance.
