In the test hole, we observed: 0-12" fine loam topsoil 12"-30" fine-grain yellow sand and silt 30"-9' fine-grain yellow sand 9'-12'+ fine-grain grey sand and silt mottling found at 9' (indicative of high ground water during spring run-off) water found at 10 1/2' We conducted a percolation test at a depth of 30" and measured a stabilized percolation rate of 1 inch in 4 minutes. While this percolation rate is excellent, the depth to ground water precludes the use of standard 8'-deep seepage pits. Either shallow pits (4' or 5' deep) or a leach field of perfor- ated pipe could function successfully in this soil. The exact number of pits or length of the tile field would depend upon the size of your house and your projected water use. Design charts for this are usually keyed to the number of bedrooms and the soil percolation rate. We encountered the soil change and water about five minutes after you left the site. Samples of this grey sand and silt were left on the ground next to the location of the percolation test in, case you are interested. Both holes have been filled in and leveled off.
