Per your request, I determined whether the existing zee purlins would adequately support the M e J U weight imposed by the addition of the solar panels. I also calculated the expected forces due to wind load,which can be used to determine roof mounting requirements. A site visit was conducted on August 23,2016 to obtain relevant measurements and to identify the secondary roof framing. Visual inspection was limited considerably by the presence of rigid insulation panels mounted to the bottoms of the purlins. The building is a single story, 6-bay,pre-engineered steel building manufactured by the Package Steel Company with approximate dimensions 120'xI00,x 20' high. The roof is a low-rise gable,pitched from the center of the building. The primary roof framing consists of steel rafters, spaced 20 ft in the project area. Perpendicular to the rafters are 8"zee purlins spaced at 4 ft on center. A standing seam metal roof is fastened to the top flanges of the purlins. Using calipers the purlin thickness was measured 0.11",or 12 gage. According to information provided by Green Mountain Electric: The panels will be ReneSola model JC310M photovoltaic panels mounted to aluminum racking. The racking will be secured to the metal roof with Corruslide standing seam clamps. A summary of my evaluation follows: Attempts were made to identify the year of manufacture and to locate the building plans. A Town of Queensbury records review yielded no information. Attempts to contact Package Steel also yielded no information. A review of historical aerial photos puts the construction date between 1983 and 1990. Attempts to obtain technical data from Package Steel for the roof purlins yielded no response. Factored load methodologies (per New York State Building Code) were used to evaluate the roof purlins for their existing load condition, as well as that resulting from the addition of the solar panels. The purlins were evaluated as a 6-bay continuous beam with uniform distributed loads. The existing roof loads were determined and the maximum purlin shear(V)and moments(M)were calculated. The maximum shear and moments were then compared to the maximum allowable shear and moments. Since we were unable to obtain specific technical data from the manufacturer for these purlins, we used maximum allowable values for typical comparable zees from other manufacturers (ABC and Steelox). Next,the solar panel loading scenario was checked,with the maximum expected shear(V)and moments(M)being calculated, and compared to the maximum allowable shear and moments. 3 HORICON AVE,GLENS FALLS,NY 12801 (518)796-1859 KJWDI I(GMAIL.COM GREEN MOUNTAIN ELECTRIC 9/14/16 - PG 2 Next, using the procedures in ASCE-7,the expected wind loads were calculated. The lateral force due to wind(shear force)was determined to be 88 lbs on each panel. The net vertical (uplift)wind force was determined to be 337 His on each panel. Finally,the proposed roof connection was evaluated against the calculated wind forces. Load test data was obtained from Cotruslide, the manufacturer of the standing seam clamps. The clamps have allowable capacities of 156 His parallel to the roof seam(i.e. lateral direction)and 233 lbs normal to the seam(i.e. vertical or"uplift"direction). Correlating the expected wind forces with the clamp capacities,it was determined that a minimum of 1 clamp per every 0.7 solar panels would be required. In conclusion: The existing purlins should be capable of handling the additional solar panel array load. A copy of the calculations and assumptions is enclosed. It's recommended that the racking system be secured to the roof using the Corruslide standing seam clamps at a minimum ratio of 1 clamp per 0.7 panels installed. Purlin twisting and web crippling are common problems associated with pre-engineered steel buildings. It is recommended that the roof system be periodically inspected for the presence of these and other conditions(i.e. splice failure,deformation). Again,the presence of the insulation panels renders thorough inspection difficult. All solar system components must be installed in accordance with manufacturers' instructions. The contractor shall provide a watertight seal around any roof penetrations,and the solar system must be installed in a manner which does not interfere with roof drainage. Because of the low profile of the panels against the roof(10 degree angle), there isn't expected to be significant snow drifting resulting from the installation of the solar panels.
