The project is a new free standing 100 x 36 foot pole barn being built in an industrial park in Queensbury, New York. 2. The site is a flat and level crushed stone outdoor storage lot. The area is routinely used for pallets of building materials. It is crossed by several lanes frequented by heavy delivery trucks and fork lifts. 3. On Monday 7/3/17, the construction contractor (Butch Barrett) mobilized to the site and proceeded to lay out the building. The design engineer (Edward K. LaPoint, PE) was notified and periodic Special Inspections commenced. 4. On 7/6/17 the contractor began excavating the pole locations. The top two feet consists of dense crushed stone (Type GP). Between 2 and 4 feet, the soils change to a dense brown well graded sand and gravel (Type GW). The allowable bearing capacity specification in the design documents of 4,000 psf was verified. The as-built dimension of the excavation is 3 x 3 feet (9 sf). The actual soil bearing at the footings are 15,660#/9sf = 1,740 psf which is acceptable. Between 4 and 6 fee the soil was dense poorly graded gravel and sands (Type SP). 5. Groundwater accumulated in the holes about 24 inches below grade surface. 1. The contractor and engineer discussed and agreed that a 2 foot deep pour of 2,500 psi, 1 inch slump, with no air entrainment should be used to provide a leveling pad. 1. The engineer told the contractor not to dewater the holes. Simply place the mix by hand through the standing water. Page 1 of 2 2. Each pole was pre-nailed with 5" #40 ptl spikes to provide anchorage into the poured concrete footings. 3. Four feet of 2,500 psi concrete with a 1" slump and no air entrainment was poured around each pole and allowed to set. 4. The double headers were connected to the poles with 8 -#16d nails„ 2 6" timber lock through bolts, and 21"jack blocks. 5. The pre-engineer trusses were connected to the headers with 6 - 3 1/2" toe nails, and 2 rt7 tie straps (8 total per truss assembly). 6. 2 x 4 cross bracing between each bay and double bracing at each end bay. 6. The as-built structural framing has been completed in accordance with the approved plans and specifications. The building should be clad and finished for its intended use. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments. nc Edward K.
