The following presents my observations and recommendations offered on that date. Upon arrival to the project site it was observed that the contractor had completed a large excavation across the proposed location of the residence. The excavation was about 12'to 13' deep and the excavated grades were observed to be comprised of a mixture of indigenous sands on the east side of the excavation, and fill sands located on the west side of the excavation. This representative of Dente Engineering used a shovel to hand excavate multiple test pits to observe the underlying soils. The fills were comprised of fine to coarse grained sand with lesser amounts of silt and gravel to their interface with the indigenous soils about 2'below the bottom of the excavation. The fills were observed to contain no appreciable amount of deleterious material. This representative of Dente Engineering used a pointed steel rod to probe the bottom of the excavation in multiple locations and the grades were observed to be generally firm under hand pressure. The contractor reported that he planned on using a large, ride-on vibratory roller to compact the fills during their placement within the building limits. It was recommended to him that the excavated grade be proof compacted prior to fill placement. The contractor also reported that the excavation was approximately 4'outside of the building limits at the top and tight to the footing at the base of the excavation. W W denfe-engineering.corn It was recommended to you in an emailed correspondence on March 27a'that the contractor: 1. Slope the excavation sidewalls to meet the requirements of OSHA that were delineated in our geotechnical evaluation of March 11, 2008. 2. Widen the excavation so that it goes outside of the house footprint at the base of the excavation. A sample of the excavated material was collected and transported to our laboratory for sieve and proctor testing.A representative of our firm is scheduled to perform in place density testing and site observations on March 31,2008. We appreciate the opportunity to be of continued assistance. Please feel free to contact us with any questions. Yours truly, Dente Engineering, P.C.- j`t- Joe Robichaud, P.E. FDE-08-049 A representative of Dente Engineering was at the above referenced project site on this date for the purpose of observing backfilling operations and performing in-place density testing of the fill soils during placement. The following observations were made: Upon arrival to the project site the contractor was in the process of removing snow from the bottom of the excavation. The excavation was approximately 12' below existing grades. The contractor reported that approximately 6' of fill was required to reach design bearing grade elevation. Following snow removal, the contractor used a large, single smooth drum, vibratory roller to proof compact the excavated grade. The contractor completed multiple overlapping passes across the reported 26'by 42'excavation bottom. The grades were observed to be firm and unyielding beneath the weight of the passing roller and were judged suitable for fill placement. Following the proof compaction, the contractor placed an approximate 12"lift of sand and gravel fill across the base of the excavation. The fill was compacted using the above mentioned roller and in- place density testing was performed. The contractor completed the remainder of the backfilling in 12" lifts, compacting each lift with the vibratory roller. Density testing was completed on each lift and all test results met the compaction requirements recommended in Dente Engineering's geotechnical evaluation. Test results were reported to the contractors representative, Jeff. In-place density test results are shown attached. BY: E.
