Dear Mr. Freer:
We are requesting a survey waiver to install a privacy fence in front of our house at
416 Aviation Road. The variance that we are requesting is for the type of fence, not
a setback. A solid fence instead of a picket fence is necessary to provide the
privacy that we wish to achieve. With the installation of the new traffic light on
Aviation Road, at the corner with Cottage Hill Road, traffic is continually at a
standstill directly in front of our picture window. A picket fence and/or vegetation
would not provide the privacy that we require to maintain our quality of life. In
addition to providing privacy, a solid fence will reduce road noise significantly. We
have observed that when there are snow banks in the winter, road noise is
diminished. Again, a picket fence would be inadequate.
The fence that we are requesting will be four feet tall and run the length of the
front of our property, approximately 60 feet. It would be aligned with our
neighbors' hedge, to the east, and fence, to the west. Both the hedge and the fence
are set back to provide room for snow. The fence itself is a decorative vinyl fence
from Home Depot. We have spoken with our neighbors, and they approve of our
plan. We will be coordinating the installation of the fence with some landscaping to
be done by Northland Gardens. We will be using a Plot Plan from a variance that
was issued in 2005 for the construction of a new garage.
When we moved into this house in 1977, we knew that there would be many
changes that we would have to adjust to. Increased traffic, light trespass, noise,
and, most recently, a major construction project across the street that altered the
already busy traffic pattern have all diminished our quality of life. This privacy
fence is simply one more adjustment that we are making.
