From: Jason Schmidt[allie@sympatico.ca] Sent: Tuesday, July 05, 2005 8:56 AM To: Miller, Douglas W. Cc: Doug Miller(home); John Simpell Subject: Snow and Seismic Loads for Air Structure t7l Adirondack Sports Load Calcs W... Good Morning Doug, In response to the voice mail left on Thursday, I offer the following in regards to snow and seismic loading for air structures. Our position on snow loading has always been that due to the movement of the dome with the wind snow tends to slide off the membrane and not build-up at the peak. This position is backed by the observations of many domes over many years. However we have on rare occasions provided snow loading calcs. I ran the Adirondack dome parameters thru the grade beam load calc program with has snow loading and I have attached it to this email. Please note that this shows that the air structure could handle a snow loading of 45 pounds per square foot. On the issue of seismic design, I cannot recall ever providing any calculations for any one of our domes. This includes any air structures we have installed in California. Air structures are not as susceptible to earthquakes as a normal building. Fabric membranes are designed to move and would not be affected by an earthquake. A quake may have some effect on the concrete grade beam as there may be a loss of soil friction along the beam or the beam may crack in some places. Both of these issues would cause a reduction to the loading resistance, but you would still need a very strong wind for the membrane to fail. Seismic design calculations can be very complicated and are provided fewer times than snow loading calcs for air structures. I hope this info is helpful. Since this is a flexible, air supported structure, the footings will never see any compression loads. The footings simply act to hold down the air dome and to resist lateral wind loads transferred to the footings by the dome fabric and tension cables. The only compressive loads on the soil under the footings will be the weight of the concrete footings themselves. However, as we discussed, the footing design counts on soil friction along the sides of the footings to help resist uplift loads. Additionally, lateral wind loads are transferred as compression loads to the soil along the sides of the footings. Therefore, 1 recommend that soil compaction testing be done for the backfill material along the sides of the footings instead of under the footings. Please call me if you have any questions regarding this matter. Sincerely, Thomas W. Nace, P.E. In my discussions with Dave, I have informed him that the Farley Group will be providing on-site supervision during the set-up, erection, and start-up of the facility, however, for his records he need this information directly from the Farley Group. Thanks, Doug -----Original Message----- From: Jason Schmidt[mailto:design@thefarleygroup.com] Sent:Tuesday,July 12, 2005 8:16 AM To: Dave Hatin Cc: Miller, Douglas W.; Doug Miller(home); John Simpell Subject: RE: Snow Load for Dome proposed for Adirondack Sports Complex Queensbury N.Y. Good Morning Dave, The snow load calculations provided to you previously were based on the maximum design loading this air structure can take when the inside temperature of the dome is the same as the outdoor temp. (furnaces are not on). Heating the interior of the dome completely changes how the snow actually builds up on the top of the membrane and allows the air structure to withstand much higher snow loads. As the heat inside the dome rises and meets the inside surface of the air structure membrane, some of the warmth transfers thru the fabric and begins melting the first layer of snow touching the outer surface of membrane. This creates a thin film of water between the built up snow and the membrane surface, and provides more than enough lubrication to let gravity take over. This process will repeat itself during a snowfall, in that if there not enough heat escaping from the membrane to melt the snow on contact, a drift will build up to a certain point, the heat will melt the contacting layer, and the snow will slide down the membrane thus eliminating any major snow loading on the structure. We recommend to all of our customers that they keep their heat on during heavy snow storms or if there is a risk of a potential heavy snowfall during non operating hours. This is a common practice with all of our customers'domes, as well as our own air structure (Our manufacturing facility is also an air-supported structure). In cases of severe snow storm forecasts,we also recommend that someone should stay at the facility to monitor the drifting around the perimeter of the dome and quickly remove any excessive build up of snow. As there is much more heat loss with an air supported structures than with typical construction methods, snow loading on the top of the membrane is typically never a problem. This is why we rarely provide any load calculations as it pertains to snow. I provided some snow calcs to you previously because I was asked to do so, but I hope the above info shows that they are not as primary of a concern as that of load imposed by wind. 7/13/2005 r Kind Regards Jason Schmidt -----Original Message----- From: Dave Hatin [mailto:daveh@queensbury.net] Sent: July 11, 2005 10:27 AM To:Jason Schnidt Cc: dwmiller@adephia.net Subject: Snow load for Dome proposed for Adirondack Sports Complex Queensbury N.Y. One air supported structure is a multi sport facility, [field sports, golf, tennis, basketball, and baseball batting] [97,200 SF] and the other a tennis and running track facility [59,500 SF]. The support module [7500 SF] contains function rooms, snack bar, offices, toilets and lockers. The total area is 164,200 SF. The tennis/track facility will be a future addition. We have classified the complex as A-4 occupancy and 1113 construction. Although this is a large building, the nature of the activities within will result in a low population. We have estimated the occupancy as follows: Multi sport facility 97,200 SF -soccer— 1 game—players and coaches 30 - casual spectators, standees, 6900 SF/ 50 SFPP 138 alternate, soccer practice -4 practice areas 120 - no spectators 0 -tennis or basketball-8 or 30 30 30 - baseball batting/pitching 12 12 Subtotal 210 162 Tennis Track Facility 59,500 SF -tennis—5 courts @ 4 each - no spectators 20 20 -track— 10,200 SF/50 SFPP 204 204 - other non tennis space—20,200 SF/50 SFPP 404 404 Subtotal 628 628 Support Module 7,500 SF - snack bar—725 SF/ 15 SFPP 48 48 - offices and staff 12 12 -function rooms— 1010 SF/ 15 SFPP 67 67 Subtotal 127 127 TOTAL 965 917 Variances are requested for the height of the multi sports facility, the area of the complex, the travel distances in the multi sports facility, the sprinkler system requirements, and the fire detection system details. Table 503 establishes a height limitation of 55 feet. The height of an air supported structure is a function of the plan dimensions, which in this case at 225'wide requires a height of 68'. The Town of Queensbury Zoning Board has approved a height variance to 75' with the concurrence of the Building Inspector and the Fire Marshal. There is an open area 60'wide with a 20' paved roadway surrounding the complex for fire fighting and emergency vehicles. The open area is serviced by fire hydrants spaced to accommodate hoses of 400' or less in length. We request a variance to 68'. 903.2.1.4 requires an automatic sprinkler system, except in the participant sport areas. We request a variance for the sprinkler system for the "spectator" areas. There is no fixed spectator seating area. Spectators will be primarily friends and family of the participants and will view events from the sidelines of the fields. There is an open area 60' wide with a 20' paved roadway surrounding the complex for fire fighting and emergency vehicles. The open area is serviced by fire hydrants spaced to accommodate hoses of 400' or less in length. The non sports area, the support module, will be sprinklered, and a fire detection and alarm system connected to a central station will be provided throughout. Exits to the exterior are provided throughout the sports areas with travel distances substantially less than the allowable 200'. It is not feasible to install sprinklers in an air supported structure. F2400 does not seem to expect sprinkler systems in membrane structures. 907.2.1 requires a fire detection and alarm system to be in accord with NFPA 72, which requires detectors to be spaced at intervals over the entire area. It is not practicable to do this in an air supported structure. We request a variance from this requirement. Because of the unobstructed curved surface of the structure smoke will rise to the high point. We propose installing smoke detectors at the high point. Since the fan system operates continuously to maintain the air pressure that supports the structure, we also propose installing detectors in the return air ductwork. Pull stations would be provided at each exit. The system will be connected to a central station. 2 Jul J! (ASI-77 Section 5-4) The institute recommends a triangular distribution of snow loading with the maximum loading at the apex or horizontal point, decreasing to zero at the 30 degree slope point.
