Town of Queensbury 745 Bay Road Queensbury, NY 12804 RE: Ed Mastoloni Septic System 50 Bay Parkway, Assembly Point Dear John: At the request of Mr. Jay Sweet of Queensbury Septic Tank Service, I inspected the existing septic system at the Mastoloni residence on 50 Bay Parkway. This is an existing pressure mound (Wisconsin Mound) system which has failed. The system is approximately 15 years old and was designed for a 4 bedroom house with a design flow of 600 gallons per day. The system consists of 3 — 1" diameter laterals installed in a 10' by 50' bed of stone over two feet of sandy fill. A copy of the original design plans is enclosed. I visited the site on July 14th and observed that there was evidence of sewage on top of the ground in two spots over the leach field. A test hole was dug through the system and I observed that the gravel and sand under the distribution piping was not saturated and did not exhibit any evidence of plugging or other failure of the gravel and underlying soil to accept effluent. I also observed that there is a cap of tight clay soil in place over the top of the gravel bed. Based upon my observations, I believe that the distribution piping and some of the small (1/4") effluent holes in the pipe have become plugged. This results in the effluent being forced out of only a few open holes at a relatively high pressure. This pressure is evidently high enough to force the effluent up through the clay cap causing the "failure". This type of failure is not uncommon in this type of system with such small holes in the distribution piping. Based upon my inspection, I am recommending that this system be fixed by simply digging it up and replacing the distribution piping and as much of the stone and sand as necessary. I am also recommending that the size of the holes in the piping be increased to 5/16" @ 30" o.c. Please call me if you have any questions. Sin ere y, ti Thomas W.
