Box 765 Lake George, NY 12845 Re: Wastewater 387 Cleverdale Road Queensbury (T) Dear Bill: As you have requested, I have reviewed the sketch which you provided for the wastewater system at 387 Cleverdale Road, Town of Queensbury, New York. Kevin Van Keuren of my office visited the site to confirm the general layout presented in the sketch. I have also discussed the system with Ivan Bell. Ivan indicated that the septic tank discharge baffle failed and allowed solid transport into the pressure distribution system and the stone absorptive bed. Based upon my investigation I offer the following: The system was apparently constructed in- 1982 (sketch date) and provided over 15 years of service with no evidence of failure. Based on an occupancy of 8 persons maximum, aximum, the NYS S Department of Health code requires approximately 465 square feet of absorption bed area. The above assumes an application rate of 0.95 GPD/SF and low water usage fixtures. The existing system is estimated to be in the range of 400 to 450 square feet in area. The existing setback from Lake George is reported to be 83 feet. The dimensions of the lot preclude construction of any reasonable wastewater system with a 100 foot setback. I recommend the following actions be taken: - Confirm that faucets / showerheads use 3.0 gallons/minute maximum fixtures and toilets are 1.6 gallons/flush or less. t ' - Install a Zabel septic tank filter in a septic tank outlet tee. The Zabel filter should be cleaned on a regular schedule. - The existing pressure distribution system should be checked to confirm that holes are free of obstruction or replaced as necessary. - Clogged stone in the bed should be replaced. - The stone/soil interface should be checked and any clogged soil should be replaced with clean sand. Septic tank solids should be checked regularly and removed as necessary. I have discussed the permitting process with Dave Hatin from the Town of Queensbury and we agreed to the following: - Ivan Bell will excavate the existing field to allow evaluation of the pressure distribution system, stone and the stone/soil interface. The existing 83+/- setback to Lake George will be maintained. The excavator, a representative of Dave's office, and myself or Kevin will meet on site and agree to a definitive course of action. A sketch of the proposed reconstructed field will be submitted to Dave's office with the normal wastewater application. Dave's office will review and, if the application is satisfactory, issue a construction permit. - Upon completion of construction, an "as built"drawing will be filed with the Town. It is my opinion that the above repairs and improvements, coupled with the proper maintenance, will provide a system capable of rendering effective subsurface wastewater treatment for a reasonable period of time. I trust the above is responsive to your request. If you should have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Ve truly yo , ames E. Hutchins Copies: Dave Hatin Ivan Bell JAMES E. HUTCHINS, P.E. Consulting Engineers PO Box 220- 12 Circle Avenue, North Creek, NY 12853 (518) 251-4210(Phone) (518) 251-5329 (Fax) June 14, 2000 Mr. Dave Hatin Building and Codes Department Town of Queensbury 742 Bay Road Queensbury, NY 12804 Re: 00-035 Bill Davidson Wastewater System Replacement 387 Cleverdale Dear Dave: On June 12, 2000 Kevin Van Keuren of my office met with John O'Brien of your office and Ivan Bell, the contractor, at the site referenced above. After discussing the various options, it was decided to replace the existing absorption bed system with a new bed system at the same elevation. The existing stone was clogged with fines and sand due to the absence of filter fabric on top of the system. It was decided to replace all of the stone and replace the six 1" distribution laterals with four 1" laterals at 17' spaced 5' on center with a 2" diameter manifold to comply with NYSDOH standards. The existing bed was 12' wide by 35' long. It was decided to build the new bed 12' wide and 40' long. The existing effluent pump and septic tank were to be used as is with a Zabel effluent filter in the outlet pipe of the existing septic tank. On June 14, 2000, Kevin again visited the site to confirm the construction. He found that the bed was constructed as agreed upon previously. The bed was 12' wide by 40' long by 14"deep. The four laterals were each 17' long, spaced 5' apart and were drilled with 1"diameter holes 2' on center. A 2" manifold was used in the center of the bed to feed the laterals. The top of the stone was checked and found to be approximately level with the top of the septic tank cover. Enclosed are two copies of the"As-built"drawings. Pictures of the new system will follow. I trust that this addresses your needs. If you should have any questions do not hesitate to contact me. Ve truly yours, Names E.
