Re: Septic System SWING AND CODE
Paul &Christine Kobel Residence, 200 Clendon Brook Rd.
Dear Mr. Clugstone:
This morning I examined a deep soil test pit at the site of the proposed septic system. for. the
Kobel residence on Clendon Brook Road. The test pit was located in the near, left side of the
leach field as viewed from the road. This location was selected because it appeared that it had
the least amount of fill placed on it during the general grading for the house.
The soils at the test pit.are: 0-26" granular fill material; 26-30" original topsoil; 30-43" loamy
sand and gravel; 42-72" sand and gravel.' There was a slight indication of mottling at 68"and the
soil was moist, but not wet, at 72".
Based upon this information, I te*commend that the bottom of the leach field laterals be placed in
'the top of the loamy sand layer at approximately 30 to 36" below existing grade, This. will
provide a minimum of 32" of separation to mottling and get the bottom of the trench below the
existing topsoil layer. After installation of the trenches, some general grading will be required to
make sure that the bottom of the trenches are no more than 30"below finish grade.
Sincerely,
Thomas W.Nace, PE

Recent review of the Kobel's application for Building Permit resulted in the
following Addendum:
I. Proper egress windows in the bedrooms are part of the current design, as demon-
strated in the window schedule on Sheet 6 of 7. Enclosed with this addendum are ad-
ditional Light and ventilation calculations.
2. Drainage membrane is only required by the footings of the foundation and over the
top of the drain pipe, rather than up the entire stem wall as the note implies in Draw-
ing Section A-5. Stem wall will be waterproofed as per Code Section R406.2
3. The screened porch will no.longer be built at the same time as the house, therefore
an appropriate sized landing ( at least 3' deep and 6' wide) will be supplied outside of
the Family Room French doors, with exterior steps to have 6" rise and 9". run as in
the General notes, Sheet 3 of 7.
4. The requirement for battery backup for each smoke detector should be added to the
General notes, Sheet 3 of 7. Also, as per New York State Code section R317.1.3, a
smoke detector shall be provided in the basement of the dwelling. Additional detec-
tors could be place in the family room, living area and study for additional assurance.
5. An appropriately sized footing shall be supplied under the chimney to support its
weight. Section R 1001.1.— 6" beyond each side of the exterior dimensions of the
chimney, at least 48" below grade.
6. The footing for the walkout side of the basement needs to be set at least 48" below
grade (frost depth), as shown on the family room elevation.
7. The curb at the top of the basement stairs within the garage will be increased to 3' x
3', to act as a platform to decrease tripping hazard. Equivalent dimensions could be
accomplished by building up to the curb with wood decking, as long as the Rise of
each step (8 1/16") remains consistent. It will be necessary to adjust adjacent door
position by 2' away from stairs.

Engineering Evaluation of Residential Building Plans Submitted
by.1 Tanya Bruno, Queensbury, New York (7 Sheets) f
for: Kobel Family, Queensbury, New York
1. This is a 2-story residence with a 2-car attached garage.
2. Floor joists 2"xl2", 16"O.C. will provide adequate support for total dead and live loads of 50
PSF 1'. floor and 40 PSF 2°d. floor.
3. Roof support is by pre-engineered trusses, 16" O.C. with pitch of 10" in 12", 8 in 12" and 4"
in 127 as noted on the plans. The truss manufacturer shall be responsible for the design and
construction of all trusses to support a minimum live load of 18 PSF normal to the roof
surface for the 10" in 12"pitched trusses, a minimum live load of 28 PSF normal to the roof
surface for the 8"in 12"pitched trusses and a minimum live load of 53 PSF normal to the roof
surface for the 4" in 12" pitched trusses. All trusses must also support the dead loads of
lumber, roofing, insulation and ceiling finish. The contractor shall be responsible for the
installation and bracing of all trusses per.instructions from the truss manufacturer.
4. The triple Micro Lam headers shown on" to carry the 2nd. floor loads are satisfactory as
three (3) 1 3/4" x 16" ML beams, dropped below the 2"xl2" floor joists. However, the 13'-
10" clear span header is only subject t6-floor joists, supporting master bath, bath/laundry and
hallway. This load can be handled by a triple 1 3/4" x 11 1/4 Parallam header installed flush
with hangers to pick up the floor joists on one side. The triple Micro Lam headers with a
combined span of 19ft. may be a three (3) 1 3/4" x 11 V4" Parallam one-piece header installed
flush with hangers where floor joists frame into it. In all cases the deflection of these headers
will be less than.1/366 span(1/240 span required by NYS code). I think the triple 1 3/4" x 11
V"headers can be purchased as one-piece 5 V4"x 11 V4"members.
5. The basement girders of 5-member 2"x12" with maximum spans of 9'-5" to 1Ofl. are
marginal. They will perform satisfactorily if the 2"x12"joints.are staggered so that there are
no more than 2 joints over at least the first post under the Kitchen/Study. An alternate
satisfactory girder would be a triple 1 3/4" x 11 V2" Micro Lam. The 4" dia. steel posts on
36"x36"xl6"reinforced concrete pads will adequately support the girders if rated for at least
an 15,000 axial load. The 4-member 2"W' post supporting .the Micro Lam beam at the
stairway should, in turn, be supported on a 24"x24"xl2" reinforced concrete pad in the
basement. There should be a total of 5 concrete pads with steel posts and 2 concrete pads
with wood posts as indicated on Sheet#5, Section A/5.
6. Screened porch construction of trussed roof-supported by double headers with a 12ft. span
and no intermediate support.is satisfactory if the headers are double 1 3/4" x 11 1/2" Micro
Lams. The 4"redwood posts on.deckmg and 2"x10"PT joists, 16" O.C. supported outboard
'by a double 2"xl2" PT girder on 4"x4" PT posts and 24"x24"xl2" reinforced concrete pads
48"below grade are satisfactory.
7. The 8" reinforced concrete foundation walls and the 8" reinforced frost walls (garage) on
16"x10" reinforced concrete footings are adequate as shown on plans. The bottom of all
footings to be at least 48" below grade, with walls keyed to footings. The reinforced 4"
concrete basement floor and the 6"-7"concrete garage floor are adequate.
8. Stair and ceiling heights are satisfactory as detailed on drawings. Insulation, as noted on
drawings appears to be adequate; however, all insulation must comply with the New York
State Energy Conservation Construction Code.
9. All design and construction must comply with the latest editions of the New York State
Energy Conservation Construction Code, the New York State Residential Code, The National
Electric Code and with any applicable local building codes and/or regulations.
