The Contractors, any, upon request of the Architect, their principal Sub- contractors shall attend such meetings and be prepared to ' furnish answers to questions on progress, workmanship or on any other subject on which the Architect or the Owner's representative might reasonably require ' information. 7. STANDARDS AND AUTHORITIES ' 7.1 Throughout this Specification references may be made to certain standard specifications issued by various trade, professional and technical organizations. The latest ' issues of these authorities shall govern insofar as it is not inconsistent for the proper installation of the work. SAFETY AND HEALTH REGULATIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION 9.1 The Contractor shall be solely and completely responsible for compliance with all applicable safety and health regulations including New York State Department of Labor Industrial Codes Rules and U.S. Dept. of Labor Safety and Health Regulations for Construction. Construction employers are required to comply with the most stringent rule or standard due to dual or concurrent State and Federal jurisdiction. Detailed information on this subject may be obtained from the Office of Lewis L. Levins; Industrial Commissioner, State of New York, Department of Labor, State ' Office Building Campus, Albany, New York 12226, and the office of Information Services, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, Washington, ' D.C. 20210. 10. PROTECTION AGAINST FIRE ' 10.1 The Contractor and his Subcontractors shall take special precautions against fire, and shall fully comply with requirements of municipal and insurance authorities. 10.2 Storage Areas In Existing Building: a. If any areas within the building are used by the 1 Contractor or any of his Subcontractors for storage of any kind either protected (locked) or unprotected, every possible protection shall be provided including ' the posting of "NO SMOKING" signs by the responsible Contractor. 11. SUBMITTALS ' 11.1 Related Requirements Specified Elsewhere: a. Paragraph 10.8 of the General Conditions. I 1 ' 11.2 Clearly identify all submittals indicating specification division or section where item or requirements for submission is specified. a. Brochures, schedules, performance charts, etc. , which show more than one item or piece of equipment shall be clearly marked to show which is being submitted for approval. b. Each submittal shall bear the name, address and number of the project, name of the contractor and/or subcontractor, name of the manufacturer or supplier, name of the Architect and be dated. 11.3 Submit the following in triplicate: ' a. Letters of certification b. Reports c. Results of tests 11.4 Shop Drawings: a. Drawn to scale and dimensioned b. Show all information to establish compliance with ' c. specifications and job conditions. Indicate adjoining work in sufficient detail to show proper installation and connection. ' 11.5 Shop drawings in the form of reproducible sepias may be submitted and prints made from the approved sepias may ' be distributed. Shop drawings not stamped with Architect's stamp and marked "approved" or "Approved with Corrections Noted" shall not be used at the Project. 11.6 When submitting prints of shop drawings, or brochures, catalog pages (cuts) , for approval, submit four copies. After final approval furnish, distribute sufficient approved copies for the proper execution of the work to subcontractors, suppliers, the Contractor's use and as follows: ' Architect - One Copy Owner's Manual - One Copy ' 11.7 Samples: a. Submit two (2) ' 11.8 Samples or Color Chips for Color Selection: a. Submit one (1) set. b. Notification of Architect's selection shall be by letter or color scheme booklet. 11.9 The Contractor shall check, mark up if required, and indicate his approval and date of approval before submit- ' ting to Architect. The Architect shall return unchecked all shop drawings and catalog pages not so marked by the Contractor. a. Assume responsibility for dimensions to be confirmed at job site to insure that items being furnished fit the space available. 1 I I12. TEMPORARY LIGHT AND POWER 12.1 The Contractor shall install, maintain adequate temporary light and power for use of all contractors. I12.2 Power consumed will be paid for by Owner. I13. TEMPORARY HEAT 13.1 The Contractor shall be responsible for the proper I protection and drying of his work against cold and freezing. WATER FOR CONSTRUCTIONI14. 14.1 Water for construction is available in the building. I15. SANITARY FACILITIES 15.1 The Contractor shall provide Sanitary Facilities for use I by all persons employed by him during the work. The Contractor shall be in charge of maintaining orderly conduct and sanitary conditions as far as the Contractors' personnel are concerned. I16. REMOVAL WORK, BARRICADES I16.1 All removal work shall be done with reasonable care. 16.2 The Contractor shall be responsible for providing and I maintaining barricades, protective structure where necessary for the protection and safety of workmen and the public. I17. APPROVAL OF PROPOSED EQUIVALENTS 17.1 Related requirements specified elsewhere: I a. Article 4, Substitutions, in Instructions to Bidders. b. Article 21.2 standard of Quality, of the Supplementary Conditions. I17.2 If, after contract award, a Contractor wishes to propose any product not named in the Contract Documents and considered by him as being "equal to" (i.e. an equivalent I of) the product or products named in the Documents, he may be submitting a written request for approval to the Architect. I17.3 For the purposes of this article the work "products" shall be deemed to include the word "articles", "items", "materials", "equipment" and "methods". I I 17.4 After contract award, requests for approval of ' proposed equivalents will be considered by the Architect in the following cases: a. The named product cannot be obtained by the Contractor because of discontinuance or manufacturer or bankruptcies, or b. The named products are not readily available because of strikes, lockouts or unavailability of raw 1 materials; the delivery date for such products would be detrimental to the sequence of construction and it can be determined that the Contractor has not failed to act diligently in placing the necessary purchase orders, or c. The proposed equivalent is superior, in the opinion ' of the Architect, to the named products, or d. The proposed equivalent, in the opinion of the Architect, is equal to the named products, and its use is to the advantage of the Owner, e.g. , the Owner receives a credit, acceptable to the Owner, as a result of the estimated cost savings to the Contractor from the use of the proposed equivalent, or ' e. The proposed equivalent, in the opinion of the Architect is equal to the named product and less than forty-five (45) calendar days have elapsed since the Notice of Award of the Contract. 17.5 Equivalents will not be considered if: 1 a. They are indicated or implied on shop drawings or products data submittals without formal request submitted in accord with Paragraph 17.3. b. Acceptance will require substantial revision of Contract Documents. 17.6 Submit three copies of request for approval of proposed equivalent. Include in request: a. Complete data substantiating compliance of proposed equivalent with contract Documents. ' b. For Products: 1. Product identification, including manufacturer's name and address. 2. Manufacturer's Literature: ' a. Product description b. Performance and test data c. Reference standards ' 3. Samples 4. Name and address of similar projects on which product was used, and date of installation. c. For construction methods: 1. Detailed description of proposed method. 2. Drawings illustrating method. d. Itemized comparison of proposed equivalent with ' product or method specified. e. Data relating to changes in construction schedule. f. Relation to separate contracts. g. Accurate cost-data on proposed equivalent in comparison with product or method specified. I ' 17.7 In making request for approval of proposed equivalent Contractor represents: a. That he has personally investigated proposed product or method, and determined that it is equal or superior in all respects to that specified. b. He will provide the same guarantee for equivalent as for product or method specified. ' c. He will coordinate installation of accepted equivalent into Work, making such changes as may be required for Work to be complete in all respects. d. He waives all claims for additional costs related to equivalent which consequently become apparent. e. He waives all claims for additional time for performance of the Contract which may develop because of the use of the proposed equivalent. 17.8 Where the Architect pursuant to the provisions of this ' Article approves a product proposed by a Contractor and such proposed product requires a different quantity and/or arrangement of duct work, piping, wiring, conduit or any other part of the work from that specified, detailed or indicated in the Contract Documents, the Contractor shall provide same at his own cost and expense. 17.9 Where the Architect pursuant to the provisions of this Article approved a product proposed by a Contractor and such proposed product requires a revision or redesign 11 of any part of the work covered by this Contract, all such revision and redesign and all new drawings and details required therefor shall be subject to the approval of the Architect and shall be provided by the Contractor at his own cost and expense. 18. "AS-BUILT" DRAWINGS 18.1 The Contractor shall maintain one complete set of his contract drawings, bound together, at the site at all times on which he shall record in ink the changes made from time to time. ' 18.2 At the completion of the contract this set of drawings, showing a complete record of his contract work as actually installed, shall be returned to the Architect. ' 18.3 Locate by dimensions to fixed corners, etc. , all changes in indicated dimensions and all critical services, items of equipment, other things not easily located due to concealment in the structure or under the ground surface. Intent is to provide Owner with data desirable for maintenance purposes. I 1 19. CLEANING UP 19.1 Each trade shall be responsible for cleaning and polishing of all work installed under his operations ' so as to leave the premises clean and ready for use by the Owner. ' 20. GUARANTEE 20.1 Each Contractor shall guarantee all work performed under his contract against faulty materials or workmanship ' and shall remedy any defects due therefrom, which shall appear within a period of one year or such longer period of time as may be the terms of any applicable special ' guarantee required by the Contract Documents from the Date of Substantial Completion. 20.2 In the case of work performed by subcontractors when guarantees of one year or special guarantees of manufacturer's guarantees or warranties of more than one year are required, the Contractor responsible for such work I shall secure written guarantees, warranties from said subcontractors and submit duplicate executed copies to Architect with cover letter listing each same, coverage and extent of coverage. 20.3 Guarantees shall be in the form incorporated herewith. 11 r 1 I I I 1 I i I ' FORM OF GUARANTEE The guarantee is to provide to the Architect in duplicate a written ' guarantee on his own letterhead incorporating the following text and providing as shown pertinent information: ' (Date of Issuance) (Owner's Project) ' (Owner's Address) (Gentlemen or Sir: ) (We or I) as (General Contractor or Subcontractor) for (all work or give category of works) for the (name of project and location of project) hereby guarantee all work performed by us and our sub- contractors for a period of one (1) year (or state longer period as may be required by specific Section of the Specification and guarantor is a subcontractor) from (given date of Substantial ' Completion as determined by the Architect) . All defects in the aforesaid work which may develop within the 11 specified period, due to faults in materials and/or workmanship (add any specific requirements mentioned in Section of Specifications when special guarantee is required) will be repaired and corrected without extra cost to the Owner, within seven (7) days after receipt of the Owner's written notice. Nothing herein intends or implies that this guarantee shall apply to work which has been abused or neglected by you, the Owner, or your successor in interest. WORK INCLUDED ' 1.1 The work of this Section includes, but is not necessarily limited by, the following: a. Excavation and backfilling b. Porous fill 2. LAYOUT LINES AND LEVELS ' 2.1 Set up base lines and level points as might be required; stake out building and related utilities as shown on drawings; erect and maintain satisfactory batter boards. 3. EXCAVATION 3.1 Excavate for the following as indicated on Drawings: a. Foundation wall, footings. 3.2 Depths: As shown on Drawings and/or as required. 3.3 Bottoms: a. Clear of loose material ' 3.4 Materials Encountered: Assume no materials will be encountered that cannot be loosened and removed with power equipment and hand tools. ' 3.5 It is not anticipated that rock requiring removal by blasting will be encountered. Should solid rock or boulders occur which cannot be removed with hand tools or power shovel, the Architect shall be notified. ' 3.6 When encountered in the work, and as required, protect existing active sewer, water, gas, electric or other utility services. Where required for proper execution of the work, relocate them as directed. Also, when encountered in the work, whether or not indicated, remove, cap or plug or otherwise discontinue existing inactive utility services. a. Comply with Section 1918 of the Penal Law by giving 72 ' hours advanced notice to Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. or New York State Electric and Gas of proposed excavation or use of explosives. Information relative ' to existing gas lines must be obtained before work can start. ' b. Notify Agencies and/or service Utility Companies having jurisdiction over specified utilities. Protect, relocate, remove, discontinue, etc. , services ' in accordance with their requirements and under their direction. c. Encountering existing septic tank and grease trap: Pump out existing septic tank, dispose of material in ' legal manner, fill unit with concrete (2000 psi) . Remove grease trap and related piping to septic tank; fill and compact as hereinafter specified. ' 3.7 Protection: Provide adequate protection to the work, workmen, general public, public and private property. ' Erect, maintain such barricades, warning signs, flags and lights as may be necessary. 3.8 Keep excavation free of water at all times. Furnish, operate sufficient pumping equipment. 3.9 Notify Architect when excavation to the required levels ' has been accomplished. 4. DISPOSAL 4.1 Remove from the site all debris, excess material resulting from excavation work; or where directed. ' 5. BACKFILLING 5.1 Backfill all excavations required by the Drawings and these ' Specifications. a. Material: From excavation, free from waste, organic or other objectionable matter. No stones over 1/2 cu. ft. b. Placing: In uniform horizontal 12" layers. c. Compaction: By tamping. 5.2 Trenches in which pipe have been laid: a. Material: Sand, fine gravel or other granular soil devoid of stones. ' b. Placing: In uniform horizontal 8" layers. c. Compaction: Hand or light mechanical tampers to avoid damaging pipe. ' d. Extent: Material and method to be used for at least two (2) feet above top of pipe. ROUGH GRADING 6.1 Cut or fill as required within the limits of the site to bring the rough grade to within the following dimensions of finish grades indicated on the Site Plan. Adjacent to existing grades. I 6.2 Degree of Finish: a. Reasonably smooth, compacted and free from irregular surface changes. ' b. Ordinarily obtainable from either blade-grader or scraper operations. c. Soften with rounding at top, bottom of banks, other breaks in grade. d. Blend subtly with adjoining grades. 7. Coordinate and cooperate with mechanical, electrical and equipment contractors so that all items of work I of other sections can be installed in the formwork or in or above porous fill before concrete placement is started. I b. Assist other trades in the installation of piping, pipe sleeves, conduit, similar items where such items are to be installed in concrete. I3. STRUCTURAL CONCRETE 3.1 Materials: II a. Portland Cement: ASTM C-150, Type 1 b. Coarse Aggregate: Hard, clean, durable, uncoated crushed stone or crushed gravel conforming to ASTM I C-33. c. Sand: Clean, hard, durable, uncoated grains free from silt, loam or clay. Water: Clean, potable and free from oil, acid and Id. injurious amounts of vegetable matter, alkali or other salts. I 3.2 Proportions, Mixing, Aggregate Size: a. Strength: Unless specified otherwise on Drawings or in articles that follow, proportion of mix shall be I as required to attain 3,000 p.s.i. minimum strength in 28 days. b. Water per sack of cement: 6 gallons maximum. c. Minimum cement content: 5-1/2 sacks per cubic yard. I d. Maximum aggregate size: 1-1/2" e. Slump 4" (+/- 1") f. Positive control of material quantities, no I acceleration and no retempering. g. Plant proportioned transit mixed or job site mixed at Contractor's option. 3.3 Placing: ' a. Conveying: To prevent separation b. Compaction: Space, rod and tamp. Internal vibrators recommended. c. No concrete installed on frozen or thawing surfaces. 3.4 Protection and Curing: a. Protect all newly placed concrete from injurious action by the sun, rain, flowing water, frost, mechanical injury and premature drying. b. Cure by an approved method to assure gradual evaporation of moisture carried in mixture. 4. FINISHING ' 4.1 Floors: a. Slabs: Steel trowel finish. 4.2 Begin floating after placing and screeding to proper elevation while concrete is still plastic. Compact the surface with floats until thoroughly densified. Dusting with sand or cement to hurry the process shall not be permitted. ' 4.3 Steel trowel finish: After floating and surface water has disappeared, steel trowel surface to a true, even, smooth surface. Continue troweling as required to bring ' surface to a smooth, hard, impervious surface free from marks or blemishes. 5. FOOTINGS 5.1 Forming: 2" nom. plank held and braced with stakes and spreaders to maintain dimensions shown. 5.2 Reinforcement: High bond deformed, intermediate grade, new billet steel bars, ASTM A-615 Grade 60. Size as ' shown on Drawings. 5.3 All footings shall be placed on undisturbed earth. Excess excavation by the Contractor under footings shall be filled with concrete at no expense to the Owner. Furnish Owner with one-half standard box of each resilient floor tile pattern, color used. 4.6 Deliver all materials to job site in manufacturer's original containers and store protected from the elements and contamination. t4.7 Inspect surfaces, materials, joints to receive work of this Division for conditions which will prevent satisfactory results in the work. Notify in writing the General Contractor of any such conditions. Starting work without written notification shall be construed as an acceptance of surfaces, etc. as being satisfactory to receive this work. 4.8 Building Temperature and Humidity Conditions: a. Gypsum board work shall be performed only when temperature can be maintained above 50 deg. F. and spaces where work is performed can be ventilated to remove moisture. b. Maintain a minimum temperature of 60 deg. F. in building during and after painting and finishing. Provide adequate ventilation at all times so that the humidity cannot rise above the dew point at the coldest wall. c. Resilient floor work shall be performed only when temperature can be maintained at 70 Deg. F. minimum ' during and after installation. 4.9 Guarantees: As may be required by Articles that follow. 5. GYPSUM BOARD WORK 5.1 Materials: As manufactured by U.S. Gypsum Company, National Gypsum Company or approved equal. a. Gypsum wallboard: 1. Standard and Fire Rated: Tapered and eased edge, paper covered gypsum board meeting ASTM C-36. 2. Water-resistant: Asphalt gypsum core, faced with multi-layered chemically treated papers, edges tapered. b. Metal accessories: 1. Corner beads: #100 "Perf-A-Bead" for outside corners. 2. Casing beads (metal edge reinforcing) : #300 "Perf-A-Trim" or #200B. i I 5.2 Except where fire-rated partitions are required use single- layer 1/2" standard or water-resistant gypsum board. Use 1/2" water-resistant type in Baths. 5.3 Fire Rated partitions and garage ceilings. a. Single layer of 5/8" fire-rated (standard or water resistant) gypsum board. 5.4 Ceilings Main Floor: Single layer 1/2" standard or water- resistant gypsum board. 5.5 General Installation Requirements: a. Install in maximum practical lengths to span walls and ceilings without end (butt) joints. If butt joints ' do occur, stagger joints, locate as far as possible from center of ceilings or walls, stagger joints on opposite side of partitions. b. Butt wallboard joints loosely together. c. Install metal casing beads (metal edge reinforcing) where indicated on Drawings and wherever gypsum board comes up against other materials and no cover is called for. d. Drive screws or nails at least 3/8 inch from edges and ends of wallboard to provide a uniform dimple not over 1/32 inch deep. e. Spacing of all fasteners used to fasten gypsum board to metal studs or furring: In strict accord with approved manufacturer's recommendations. 5.6 Installation of Gypsum Board on Framing: a. Walls and ceilings: Apply with long dimension at right angles to framing. b. Fasten to studs, furring using recommended self- drilling, self-tapping Phillips head screws driven with power screw drivers with clutch mechanism for driving screws to a preset depth, spaced no greater than 12 inches in field and along abutting edges. 5.7 Joint Treatment: Use compound and tape, products of the manufacturer of gypsum board. a. Apply bedding compound to all joints, screw heads, corners. Apply tape and as many costs of compound as required for smooth, continuous surfaces, allowing drying periods as recommended between coats. ' b. Gypsum board walls and ceilings scheduled to receive semi gloss or gloss finish to receive skim coat of compound. I i 6. PAINTING & FINISHING 6.1 Materials: a. Painting and finishing materials shall be the best quality manufactured by Sherwin-Williams, Pratt & Lambert, The Glidden Company, Benjamin Moore, Rez Woodtones, Inc. b. Unless otherwise specified, proprietary names used ' in schedule that follows refer to Pratt & Lambert. 6.2 Preparation of Surfaces: a. Surfaces which are in such condition that proper finish cannot be produced by the methods described or by number of coats specified, shall receive such special treatment or additional coats as may be ' necessary to produce a smooth, durable and satisfactory finish. b. Clean surfaces to be painted free of loose dirt, dust ' before painting is started. 6.3 Application of Finishes: Mix, prepare and apply paint in strict accordance with the directions of the manufacturer, generally as it comes from the container without thinning. When thinning is necessary or required, it shall be done as recommended by the manufacturer. a. Finish door tops, bottoms, edges same as balance of door after they are fitted under Division 8. b. Upon completion of all work specified under this Division, all excess materials, rubbish and debris shall be removed from the site. Contractor shall be responsible for leaving the site in a neat and orderly condition. 4.6 Instructions, maintenance and operating manuals: a. Provide operating and maintenance manuals for all appliances in accordance with General Requirements. 4.7 Guarantee: a. Submit required guarantee for all items this Division. 5. CABINETRY (BATH VANITIES & KITCHEN CABINET) ' 5.1 Quality: Wood framed, wood composition board panels and high density, plastic laminate faced doors and drawers: Contemporary style, "Aristo Craft" or equal complete with all hardware.
