Since concrete is strong in compression, round structures are very efficient to use underground. However when a large differential in lateral pressure on opposite sides of the structure occurs, tensile stresses may be real- ized. While normal traffic (e.g. AASHTO H20-44) does not create a significant pressure differential, other loadings, such as buildings or railroad traffic, may cause large differentials.
