Box 269 Rome, New York 13440 Final Report: Kitchen Wastewater System Ramada Inn Queensbury,NewYork Dear Mr. Loomis: Work has been completed on reconstruction of the kitchen wastewater system at the Ramada Inn, Exit 19, I-87, Queensbury,New York. The Condon Company applied topsoil and grass seed to the work area after backflling and grading were completed. We encountered several unanticipated underground structures while excavating for the new absorption system. • First, the excavator uncovered a 4-inch cast iron water pipe running parallel to the Pool Building wall at a distance off the wall of some 13.5 to 14 feet and at a depth to the top of the pipe of 4.5 feet. • Second, one existing failed seepage pit was actually set against the water pipe. We removed that seepage pit(of necessity). • The contractor uncovered a 2-inch gas lateral close to the existing distribution box. Niagara Mohawk had marked the line of the gas lateral on the ground. • Fourth, the contractor uncovered an extensive system of precast leaching chambers in the area in which we had planned to construct new seepage pits. Tops of the chambers are some 4.5 feet below grade. These individual structures(13.5'L x 3.5'W x 1.5'D) are laid edge-to-edge, like floor tiles, and cover an area we estimate at 1600 square feet, more or less. We discovered that only a single 4-inch line had been installed from the distribution box to the system of chambers. The distribution line was plugged solid with grease at the Vertical 90-degree bend. The grease plug had rendered the chambers useless. P.O. Box 792 • Glens Falls, Newyork 12801 • (518)793-1475 • FAX (518)798-3747 • e-mail: cscuds@global2000.net May 24,2001 l l O Mr. Arthur Loomis, Vice President O) CRM Management, Inc We believe the chambers had lay dormant for quite a number of years. We lifted two chamber hatch covers and inspected the granular absorption material. We found the soil to be in good condition and suitable for absorption. • These circumstances were conveyed to the Queensbury Code Enforcement Officer, David Hatin. Mr. Hatin made his final inspection on the following day while I was at the construction site. We gave Mr. Hatin a summary of the underground situation the contractor had encountered. We identified elements that had been removed and explained our intention to place the absorption chambers back in service (along with three restored seepage pits). Mr. Hatin found this modification to the original plan acceptable. He asked only that this office submit an"as-built" drawing for his files. Removing the chambers for off-site disposal in order to install three new seepage pits would have been both foolish and very expensive. Therefore we decided to restore three seepage pits, lay new pipe, and place the absorption chambers back in service. The result is that the total effective absorption area is larger than we had planned. • We did encounter one additional and unexpected seepage pit close to the cast iron water pipe. With further exploration we found a 6"asbestos-cement lateral from the pool building to the pit. We believe that seepage pit was installed to serve the swimming pool. We found no evidence of sewage or kitchen waste around that seepage pit. The attached revised drawing is a record plan of the system constructed by Condon Septic &Drain Service as approved by the Town of Queensbury. I hereby certify that the completed works were restored by Condon Septic &Drain Service as set forth above and as shown on the attached"as-built" drawing. Sincerely, Charles H. Attached also is our May 24 Final Report to our client, CRM Management, Inc. of Rome,New York. During construction we found that record information was incomplete. We encountered underground structures we had no prior knowledge about. These events required that we make field changes. The actual absorption area,as built, is greater than the design by some 65%.
