Evidently, at that time the applicable setback standards precluded the placement of a conventional absorption system.The holding tank system installed consists of three(3)- 1000 gallon precast concrete tanks in series located in a lawn area just east of the house. This plan proposes a replacement system in compliance with the Town of Queensbury On-Site Sewage Disposal Ordinance—Chapter 136. With the approval of the Eljen In-Drain system by the New York State DOH(March 1999)an absorption system requiring less area can be installed on this site and still meet the current setbacks to neighboring wells,property lines, and the shoreline of Lake George. The system as proposed herein consists of reuse of two of the holding tanks as the septic tank, a duplex pump pit and a fill absorption field using Eljen In-Drain units. This replacement system will meet all setback requirements and will comply with today's standards for hydraulic capacity and material specification. Hydraulic Loading: 550 gallon per day system design With a daily flow based on 110 gallons/day/bedroom the system could accommodate a five(5)bedroom home. As it exists the residence has 3 bedrooms. Soils Analysis: Raised(Fill) System The proposed replacement system will be a raised(fill)system at a location meeting the Town of Queensbury standards (100' min.)from the lake. The actual absorption field location (300') would also satisfy the lake setback distance even if this was considered a new system. In consideration of the fill system standards three test holes within the area of the proposed absorption field indicate conditions suitable for a fill system,i.e.-three(3') feet of naturally occurring soil exists above an impervious layer or seasonally high groundwater. The soils consisted of 24" to 27" of sand to sandy-silt material before encountering a silty soil to 36" and deeper. One of the holes had evidence of • water at 25". There was no evidence of mottling in any of the holes within the 15" to 18" of sandy loam. It is proposed that the sand to sandy-silt soils will be supplemented with 24"of specified fill soil(thus meeting the 3' separation requirement)to be placed so that it will stabilize prior to the installation of the Eljen bed system. Percolation Tests: Native soils Two(2)perc tests were conducted within the native soils in the area of the proposed field. Results were a stabilized rate of 5 minutes/inch for PT#1 and 15 minutes/inch for PT#2. The fill soils will no doubt have a perc rate of 5 minutes/inch but as this raised (fill)system is using the native soils in part for the treatment zone the design is based on a perc rate of 11 -15 min./inch. Q/a Design Criteria: Septic Tank size: Minimum size for a five bedroom design is 1500 gallons as per NYS Dept. of Health standards. The proposed tank is a combined 2000 gallon capacity with two 1,000 gallon tanks in series. Effluent Pump Station: The system will require a duplex effluent pump system capable of 6 gpm at 15' TDH. The pump pit shall be a precast concrete structure(or approved equal)with the control panel wired for placement within the house. An audible alarm shall be provided with the controls. The dosing volume of the pump cycle shall be equal to 75 to 100% of the force main and distribution pipe capacity. This volume is calculated to be approximately 85 gallons. Set pump controls to pump 80±gallons per cycle. Pump will operate approximately 7 cycles per 'design flow' day. The third existing 'holding tank° will be connected by a 4" PVC pipe to the pump pit to serve as an overflow tank. This will allow the pump pit to be sized for the dosing volume while the overflow tank can handle emergency storage. Force Main: Piping to be 1'h" HDPE pipe to a distribution box at the raised system site. The force main shall self drain back to the pump pit upon pump shutdown. Raised Disposal Field: The system shall consist of'Eljen In-Drain units: Type B', installed in a bed configuration within the stabilized fill soils. The daily flow rate of 550 gallons requires 961f of Eljen Type B units at the design application rate. Use 2 runs of 481f each in a bed configuration to total 961f of Eljen units. The separation distance between the Type B units shall be 2'. The area required for this absorption field shall be approximately 10' x 50'. WHEN THE BED AREA HAS HAVE BEEN EXCAVATED, THE SIDES AND BOTTOM SHALL BE RAKED TO SCARIFY ANY SMEARED SOIL SURFACES. 10. CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT NOT NEEDED TO CONSTRUCT THE SYSTEM SHOULD BE KEPT OFF THE AREA TO BE UTILIZED FOR THE ABSORPTION FIELD SYSTEM TO PREVENT UNDESIRABLE COMPACTION OF THE SOILS. 11. EACH DISTRIBUTION LINE SHALL CONNECT INDIVIDUALLY TO THE DISTRIBUTION BOX AND EXIT AT THE SAME SLOPE FOR THE FIRST 5 FEET TO 10 FEET FROM THE BOX (1/8" PER FOOT). 12. THE DISTRIBUTION BOX SHALL BE SET LEVEL AND ARRANGED SO THAT EFFLUENT IS EVENLY DISTRIBUTED TO EACH DISTRIBUTION LINE.
