The party/fire wall assembly is supported at-the base by a steel C track fastened to the foundation and at the ceiling by aluminum clips attached to the building wood framing. If exposed to fire,the aluminum clips melt and breakaway permitting construction damaged by fire to collapse while the party/fire wall remains intact,thereby maintaining protection of adjacent construction. 4.2 System Components 4.21. C Track The C Track is amominal 25 gage,2"wide web with 1"deep flanges,hot dipped galvanized steel track. It is attached to the foundation with power driven or other appropriate anchors.to laterally-support the base of the wall assembly. 4.2.2 H-Stud The H Stud is a nominal 25 gage,2"wide web with I=1/4"overall wide flanges,hot dipped galvanized steel stud. It secures the vertical edges of the abutting shaft liner panels between the foundation and ceiling and between floors. 4.2.3 Gyproc Fireguard Shaftliner The Gyproc Fireguard Shaftliner is I"thick by 24"wide and complies with ASTM C 442. Two abutting layers are inserted in the C Track with the H Stud fitted over the long edge to form the solid core of the wall assembly. 4.2.4 Gyproc Fireguard C gypsum board The Gyproc Fireguard C gypsum board is 1/2"thick x 48"wide and complies with ASTM C 36. A layer is required toacover each side of the abutting shaftliner panels to create a vertical non-load bearing noncombustible party/fire wall assembly. 4.2.5 Angle Clip Aluminum angle'clips are I"x 2"to 2-1/2"x 2"wide x 0.050"thick(minimum). The clips attach each side of every other H-Stud to the adjacent wood framing. 4.2.6 Fasteners (a)I" Type S drywall screws;(b) 1-1/4"Type W drywall screws;(c)3/8"Type S pan head screws. Each aluminum angle clip is attached to an H-Stud with a 3/8-inch Type S pan head screw or 1-inch Type S screw,and to the wood framing with a 1-1/4-inch Type W screw. 4.2.7 Fire stopping Gypsum board strips,or mineral fiber safing insulation(4 lbsper cubic foot nominal density). DOS-1331 (10/97) Certificate of Acceptability No. 0009 Expiration date : May 11,2002 Page 2 of 4 4.3 Installation 4.3.1 Fire Stopping Mineral fiber safing insulation(4 pcf minimum'density)or gypsum board strips as shown in Detail No. I shall be used to fire stop openings adjacent to the party/fire wall at floor and ceiling.levels,and at terminations with the roof deck or exterior walls in Details No.2. For one-and two-family dwelling,the party/fire wall shall extend at least 6"above roofs of combustible construction, and at least 6"beyond exterior walls of combustible construction. As an alternative,the party/fire wall may terminate at the underside of a roof and at the interior surface of an exterior wail where such roof and wall are protected construction having the same fire resistance rating as the party fire wall,for a distance of at least 18"at both sides of the party/fire wall. For multiple dwellings,party/fire walls shall extend at least 24"above roofs and at least 12"beyond exterior walls.As an alternative,party/fire walls.may terminate at the underside of a roof,and at the interior surface of an exterior wall where such roof and wall have a fire resistance rating of less than 3/4 hour,and are protected with noncombustible construction having the same fire resistance rating as the party/wall for a distance of at least 24"at both sides of the party/fire wall. Party fire/walls may terminate at the underside of a non-combustible roof, and at the interior surface of a noncombustible exterior wall where such roof and wall have a fire resistance rating of at least 3/4 hour. Party/fire wall projections through roof decks or exterior walls shall be covered by noncombustible flashing that will resist corrosion and galvanic,action,and be designed to have a sliding and slip-type ability that will allow for expansion or fire collapse. 4.3.2 Openings and Penetrations in Fire Walls Openings are permitted in fire walls as described herein. There shall be no openings permitted in the party wall. Openings are permitted for doors not exceeding 44"x 88"and for large ducts,or groups of ducts not exceeding 5 square feet. Such openings shall be framed around the full perimeter of the opening with suitable steel studs and channels to maintain adequate support for the wail,and shall be protected by an opening protective having a fire resistance rating of at least 1-1/2 hour installed in accordance with the terms of its listing by a recognized testing agency. Penetrations through the gypsum panels to permitpassageofnoncombustible pipes,small ducts,and electrical conduits shall be permitted in fire wails provided any such opening does not exceed 20 square inches in any 100 square feet of the face of the fire wall,and that the size of any such penetration that would permit the passage of flames and hot gases be no more than 1/2"larger than the outside dimensions of the pipe,small ducts,and electrical conduits. Penetrations shall be tightly fire stopped using mineral fiber safing insulation or Fire Halt Sealant, 4.3.3 Field Erection Beginning at the concrete foundation,a horizontal 2"C Track is attached with power-driven fasteners or equivalent anchors spaced not over 24"o.c. Two Iayers of I-"Fireguard Shaftliner with the H-Stud fitted over the Ion-edges of the shaftliner are inserted into the C Track and installed progressively for the full length ofthe party/fire wall. All field erected shaftliner panels shall be tightly engage to the H sections and C Track. On each side,a layer of 1/2"Fireguard C gypsum board is screwed to the H-Studs and C Track with I" type S screws 12" o.c. Every,other H-Stud is connected to the adjacent wood framing at the ceiling level with aluminum angle clips,one on each side.Each clip is attached to an H-Stud with a 3/8"Type S pan head screw or I"Type S screw,and to the wood framing with a 1-1/4" Type W screw(see Detail No.1). The height of the H Studs and shaft liner panels between the foundation and ceiling level,and between the floors shall not exceed 10'-0". The top of each section of the assembly which shall extend 3"to 6"above the floor or roof-ceiling framing is capped with a C Track. 4.3.4 Sound Transmission Where required by Code Section 732.2(c)(2),the construction of the framing adjacent to the party/fire wall shall be completed so as to provide the sound transmission loss between dwelling units. Sound transmission loss requirements are met with 1/2" gypsum board fastened conventionally with nails or screws to the 2x4 wood framing, and with insulation in the cavity on both sides of the Gyproc Area Separation Wall(Details I and 2). DOS-1331(10/97) certificate of A ccep ta bility No. 0009 Expiration date May 11,2002 Page 3 of 4 5.BASIS FOR ACCEPTABILITY 5.1 Applicable code sections 5.1.1 NYS UFPBC Section 606.3(a)(84)defines fire wall as a wall of noncombustible construction,with qualities of fire resistance and structural stability,which completely subdivides a building into fire areas and which resists-fire spread. 5.1.2 Section 610.1(d)requires that assemblies of building construction to be tested in accordance with reference standard RS 4-1,ASTM Standard E 119-88 for fire enduranc'e rating. 5.1.3 The State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council has adopted as test procedures for"fire walls/party walls"the ASTM Standard E 119-88 Section 9 Fire Endurance Test and Section 10.3 Hose,Stream Test Optional Program. 5.2 Submitted information 5.2.1 Drawings have been provided and are on file representing vertical and horizontal cross sections of a typical wall with the system components noted in the details. .. I .' . k 5.2.2 The manufacturer has provided a copy of the evaluation report for Test Number WHI-405-1294 on the wall assembly issued on April 3,1995 by Warnock Hersey which concludes the assembly successfully completed the code council test procedures for party/fire walls in accordance with ASTM Standard E-I 19 . The product compliance satisfies the requirement of 9 NYCRR610.1(d)for a hr fire resistance rating. 6.CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTABILITY 6.1 This certificate is valid for a period of two years from date of issuance unless sooner revoked,and is subject to renewal thereafter.Certificates that are not re-certified shall not be used or referred to.In order to determine the current certification status,please contact the Division of Code Enforcement and Administration at(518)474-407'). 6.2 The manufacturer shall supply instructions that provide information on the approved installation and use of the product. Any conflicts between this certificate and the manufacturer's installation instructions void this certificate.Materials and methods of construction shall conform to the test results,brochure, and specifications submitted to and on file with the Division. 6.3 The party/fire wall components shall conform to the drawing and specifications submitted to and on file with the Department of State Codes Division (see detail No.1 and No.2). 6.4 A registered architect,licensed professional engineer,or approved inspection agency shall certify to the building official that the party/fire wall assembly complies with the requirements set forth in the Certificate of Acceptability. 6.5 The party/fire wall and building shall conform with the requirements of subdivision 4.3 above for fire stopping , openings in fire walls,field erection and sound transmission. 6.6 That the building shall be classified as a one and two-family dwelling,or as a multiple dwelling of Group B 1,B2,B3,or B4 occupancy containing dwelling units or sleeping rooms. 6.7 The party/fire wall shall serve as a noribearing,noncombustible wall. 6.8 In the event the party wall becomes exposed to the exterior,the authority having jurisdiction shall require the person having responsibility for the building to cover the exposed side of the wall with material that will provide adequate protection so that it can serve as an exterior wall. 7.INFORMATION TO BE SUBMITTED TO CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL In order to aid in determination of compliance with this certificate,documents submitted to officials charged with enforcement of the code shall reflect at a minimum the following information 7.1 Manufacturer Installation Instructions.
