The NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, Section 1171.5, states that spraying applications using flammable and combustible materials shall be in conformity with reference standard 47-6. Reference standard 47-6, NFPA 33, Spray Application Using Flammable or Combustible Materials requires the following... 1. Metal trashcans with covers be provided for soiled rags. 2. Combustible spray booth filters should not be used when spontaneous ignition is a concern. 3. Electrical devices in and around the spray booth shall meet the requirements of NFPA 70, the National Electric Code. 4. If spray equipment is interlocked with the booth ventilation, this listed area (electrically) must extend 5 feet horizontally and 3 feet vertically from the booth in all directions. 5. If the spray equipment is not interlocked with the booth ventilation, the listed area (electrically) must extend 10 feet horizontally and 3 feet vertically from the booth in all directions. 6. The booth should be bonded and grounded. 7. The booth exhaust should terminate 6 feet from a wall or roof and at least 25 feet from nearby combustible construction. 8. Drying areas should also be ventilated. "HOME OF NATURAL BEAUTY . . . A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE" SETTLED 1763 Mr. Jerry Zukowsky Page 2 of 2 9. 25 gallons of class IA liquids shall be permitted outside of a listed storage cabinet, Up to 120 gallons of Class IB, IC, II, and III, liquids may be stored outside of a listed cabinet. If your use of flammable and combustible liquids grows beyond this, other requirements may apply. 10. Spray areas and mixing rooms shall be protected with an approved automatic extinguishing system. An approved system may include a properly designed and installed sprinkler, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or clean agent system. If a well- ventilated spray booth is used, the spray area might not extend beyond the booth. The exhaust plenum and the exhaust ductwork shall also be protected. 11. The spray booth must be at least 3 feet away from combustibles on all sides. The booth can be placed against a non-combustible exterior wall or a one hour or better-rated partition. 12. Section 1004.2 (e) of the Uniform Code states, "Every system using recirculated air and serving an area of public assembly, or more than one fire area or more than one story of a building, shall be provided with safety controls arranged so that when the air in the system contains smoke of a predetermined intensity, or has an abnormal rise in temperature, the fans causing normal circulation in such area shall stop and require manual reset. Such safety controls in buildings more than 70 feet in height shall be smoke detectors located in the return air system in each story, shall stop the recirculating fans serving the smoke affected area, activate an alarm at the fire control panel, and require manual reset at the fire control panel." "Where a ventilating system is installed in a building that contains a fire alarm, fire and smoke detecting or sprinkler system, there shall be provided a control that will automatically stop the ventilating fans when any such fire protection equipment is activated.
