RE: Lot 151 Founders Way (Bedford-Close) David &Kelly Andersen- - Dear Joel: Last week Mike Dagostino, of Dagostino Concrete, called me regarding a portion of a footing under a garage area. I have not seen the site, however it is reported that the foundation:of the 20'x30', single story garage consists of a 8' wide x 4' high concrete wall section, bearing on a concrete footing. The footing is 8"thick, 20"wide, and is reiforced with 2-#4 bars. I understand that of principle concern is that there is a corner section of the footing that is approximately 5.5"thick. This occurs over a length of 3 feet. The question posed is if this 5.5"thick footing section is adequate to support the loads from the garage. If the footing fails, it would do so because of 1. shear cracking in the footing due to inadequate thickness and 2. inadequate compaction of supporting soils. By checking the allowable shear in the footing versus the applied load (refer to the enclosed sheet), we find that the 5.5"thick footing section to be adequate to support the applied loads. While I was not present at the time the footings were poured,Mike communicated to me that underlying sandy soils were compacted. Hence, this condition should be adequate to support the footing.
