I advised the Hasson ' s that the fee for the building permit would be approximately $275 . 00 . 1 came upon this figure after consulting the fee schedule supplied by your office . When I attempted to pay the fee for said permit I was advised that the fee was $314 . 00 . I assumed that I had made a mistake and let it go at that . On March 24th I recteved a call from your office asking if I had paid the fee yet . It seems that no record of my payment could be found . After arriving and supplying your office with my reciept , l was advised that the fee would be an additional $22 . 00 . This brings the grand total of the building permit to $336 , 00 , The problem here , as I see it , is that I am being unjustly charged . Because of the difference between my original calculations and the final fee I asked the building inspector present to explain the fee to me . In explaining the calculation procedure to me I noticed that the rear porch was included in the first floor living area . Said porch is 112 square feet . This area is unexcavated , it has no finish fixtures of any kind , it has no plumbing , electrical , or finish flooring attached . It is a slab of concrete exposed to the elements . It is not living area . The second area of concern arose when I noted that he used the outside dlarnsnsions of the first floor to figure the second floor square footage . The home in question is a cape . It has no second floor exterior wall in the front . The roof line begins at the top of the first floor . The home has no knee walls . The interior walls start in the front portion of the home back approximately 8 feet . This allows them to extend to a full 8 feet without knee walls . The area in question here is approximately 288 square feet . It is not living area . It is sealed attic space . The average person may not know the difference between the areas in question and actual living space , but surely you do . You must agree that to be charged for these areas is '. incorrect . Your office calculated the square footage of the home out to almost 2500 . When figured according to my procedure the sum of the two floors is 2028 sq . ft . This accounts for the major difference in fee calculations . When I brought my concerns up to the inspector present he stated that he was sorry but he counted the areas in question as living space . If the fee schedule had said the fee was based on gross building size I would see no problem with the fee . The fee schedule clearly stated "living space" would be used to arrive at the fee . For this reason I feel that the fee should be adjusted , And I should be afforded a refund accordingly . I trust you will see this in a fair light .
